This qualification is expiring. The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December
2017.
Purpose
This qualification recognises learners who are able to enter the work force with the skills to
produce and communicate a fit for purpose, developed design response (product or
graphics) which meets a defined need. It is envisaged that students gaining this
qualification will wish to enter the design industry and build upon this qualification in
subsequent work and training.
The qualification is targeted at secondary school students undertaking courses in Graphics
and Design and is linked to the curricula at Years 12 and 13. Most studying for the
qualification will do so in combination with other Year 12 and 13 subjects and will work
towards it over 2 years.
It is anticipated that broadly based programmes that meet the needs of the curriculum will
be maintained and that evidence towards the attainment of the standards will be collected
as part of the learning process.
Special Notes
Entry information for programmes of education and training assessed against the unit
standards in the qualification:
Open. However, it is recommended that students should have achieved the following unit
standards before entering programmes leading to qualification:
Unit 7489, Identify design problems and carry out investigation;
Unit 7490, Apply visual design elements to solve design problems;
Unit 7491, Develop and refine design solutions;
Unit 7492, Present design work;
Unit 7507, Use freehand sketching techniques to show design development.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess by a recognised Quality
Assurance Body before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Organisation with
consent to assess and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the
moderation system that applies to those standards. Consent to assess requirements and the moderation
system are outlined in the associated Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR) for each standard.
