Thermal decomposition

This is the breakdown of a substance using heat.

1.

Copper carbonate

Copper carbonate is green when it thermally decomposes it turns black as copper oxide forms.

Copper Carbonate  Copper

Oxide + Carbon dioxide.

Symbol equation:

Draw the apparatus used. (leave 10 lines)

Reaction of Copper II Carbonate with acid

Copper carbonate reacts with dilute sulphuric acid to form copper sulphate solution, carbon dioxide and water.

Note your observations (leave 10 lines)

2.

Limestone thermally decomposing (Calcium

Carbonate)

Calcium Carbonate  Calcium Oxide + Carbon dioxide

Calcium oxide is a white solid.

Observations when a small amount of water is added

Solid crumbles

Steam evolves

Reaction is very exothermic

Calcium Oxide + water

calcium Hydroxide

If even more water is added the calcium hydroxide forms LIMEWATER

This is used to test for the presence of CO2

CaCO

3

CaO + CO

ADD LITTLE WATER

add Ca(OH)

ADD MORE WATER
