dear Padre:
Calendar:
Can Catholics who commit suicide be buried in Catholic
cemeteries?
My friend's son committed suicide. He was distraught over his brother's
death and not in his right mind. Can he be buried in a Catholic cemetery?

Dear Janice,
Wednesday – October 12
Before I answer your question, I offer my heartfelt sympathy to your friend
over the loss of his sons.
Rom 2:1-11 / Lk 11:42-46
The Church teaches that our lives are "not ours to dispose of" (Catechism of
the Catholic Church, 2280). Suicide is a serious matter, but the Church also
says that "Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of
hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one
committing suicide" (2282). Bearing that in mind, the Church compassionately
states, "We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have
taken their own lives...God can provide the opportunity for salutary
repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives"
(2283).
In general, Catholics who commit suicide are neither deprived of full burial
rites in the Church, which commends all of the dead "to God's merciful love
and pleads for the forgiveness of their sins" (Order of Christian Funerals, 6),
nor are they deprived of burial in a Catholic cemetery—a sacred place that
helps bring peace to those confronted by the suddenness of suicide.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY - WE’RE ALL MISSIONARIES:
Do you know the date of your Baptism? Well, on that day,
you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your
faith with those around you – and to be part of the Church’s
mission to the world. We are not all able to travel to foreign
lands as St. Francis Xavier did. However, we can all make
effort in our daily lives – through prayer and sacrifice – to
support those men and women who are called to leave their
homeland and preach the Good News of the Lord in a foreign
land. On World Mission Sunday, (Sunday, October 23) we
have the opportunity to be part of the Church’s missionary
work in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands
through our prayers and generous help offered to the Society
for the Propagation of the Faith. Please use the envelope in
your packet for this special collection.
