Dying Catholic
Many Catholics don’t have any experience with the rites and customs relating to death and burial
until a loved one dies. The round of visits to the funeral home, cemetery, and Rectory can leave
your head spinning. Planning prayers and the Mass, programs, holy cards, music, pallbearers,
and schedules are all necessities. For some people the learning curve starts with some basics that
even faithful Catholics are unsure about. This month of the holy souls is the perfect opportunity
for reflection on these realities.
Before Death – when someone is known to be dying, please remember to call the Priest to
administer the sacraments. Hopefully the sick person is conscious and can participate in the
prayers and sacraments. Once a person dies, the Priest cannot administer the sacraments. Only
prayers for the deceased can be offered. If possible the sick person should receive the Sacrament
of the Anointing of the Sick, absolution from sins and the Apostolic Pardon, and the last Holy
Communion (Holy Viaticum).
The Mass of Christian Burial (funeral Mass) - if possible, Catholics should be buried with a
Mass. The Mass is the perfect prayer as it makes present the redeeming sacrifice of Christ on
Calvary. The deceased is in need of this prayer for the forgiveness of sins and the intercession of
the saints to lead them, we pray, into Paradise. The Mass is the fullest expression of the
Church’s prayer for the departed.
Burial or cremation? Traditionally the body is brought to Church for Mass and then buried in
the ground or a vault to await the resurrection of the body. Until recently there was the concern
that cremation implicitly denied bodily resurrection and was prohibited by the Church. Since
this danger is lessened in today’s society, the local bishops may now allow not only the burial of
cremains, but cremains may now be brought into Church for the funeral Mass in the Archdiocese
of Washington. Cremains are to be interred directly into the earth or placed in a columbarium.
Cremains of Catholics are never to be scattered in any form. The body, even when cremated, is
to be treated with the utmost respect as it awaits its reunion with the soul on the Last Day.
Where to be buried? Catholics have always been encouraged to be buried in a Catholic
cemetery. The ground there has been blessed, is in the perpetual care of the Church, and such
cemeteries regularly have Masses offered for the happy repose of the soul of the deceased buried
there. Catholics may be buried in non-Catholic or secular cemeteries, but the site should be
blessed during the burial rite.
Here at Saint Joseph’s there are no grave lots to be sold in our parish cemetery. We regularly
have burials in our cemetery for those who already own deeds from previous purchases. Queen
of Peace Cemetery is the local Catholic cemetery operated by the Archdiocese of Washington.
There are still many lots for sale there for those in need of burial sites. (Contrary to popular
opinion, Charles Memorial Gardens is not a Catholic cemetery – although many faithful
Catholics are buries there.)

Offertory for Sunday, October 27, 2013 - $4,656.00. World Mission & Propagation of Faith
Collection - $ 995.00. Thank you for your generosity.
A visit from the Bishop – on Sunday, 17 November, the Most Reverend Martin D. Holley,
auxiliary bishop of Washington, will be the celebrant and homilist for the 10 a.m. Mass.
All Souls Day Donation – as we did last year, our Parish will donate $2,000 to Hospice of St.
Mary’s in honor of All Souls Day. Hospice continues to take care of our sick and dying
parishioners and their families, especially at Hospice House in Callaway. We can always count
on Hospice to provide for the spiritual needs of their patients – the Rectory always gets a phone
call when they are caring for one of our parishioners.
Priest Convocation - All of the Priests of the Archdiocese of Washington will be attending a
Convocation next week from Tuesday, November 5th until Thursday, November 7th. This
Convocation is held every two years, this is a rare time for the Priests to pray together and build
fraternity.
Mother Catherine Spalding School News – Our Christmas Bazaar will be held on Sunday,
November 3rd from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The Veterans of Helen would like to invite you to attend our upcoming 28th Annual Veterans
Day Observance Program on Monday, November 11th at 2 p.m. at our memorial site in
downtown Helen, MD. Immediately following the program, there will be food, refreshments,
and fellowship.
Thank you to everyone that brought in baby items for the Care Net Pregnancy Center during the
month of October.
Saint Joseph Church Annual Fall Dinner
Sunday, November 10, 2013
Brown Envelopes for Donations – We have discovered that purchasing our turkey breasts in
bulk is a reliable and cost-effective way to have enough turkeys for the Dinner. Brown envelope
donations are a proven success! Your donations help us purchase the items we need and
contribute to the overall financial success of the Annual Dinner. Many families make a donation
of whatever they would have spent on buying raffle tickets and/or purchasing turkey breasts in
the brown envelopes that are available in the Church.
The Country Store will be returning this year. We could use any fresh vegetables such as kale
or turnips. Apples and sweet potatoes are always a good seller. We can use anything that you
would buy in a country store.
Bake Sale Table – Please consider baking for our Fall Dinner. We can use cakes, pies,
brownies, cookies. You may bring them to the school on Saturday or early Sunday morning.
We need a lot of donations for this bake sale table because we also set up a table outside for the
people that purchase carryouts
Craft Room – our crafters have been working hard to supply us with some beautiful crafts again
this year. They are in need of gently used items they can sell or other craft items parishioners
have made and would like to donate. We assure you there will be something there for everyone.
Don’t feel overwhelmed!
Over the next few weeks you will be receiving information and envelopes for All
Souls Day, the special collection for Retired Priests of the Archdiocese of
Washington, and brown envelopes for the Annual Fall Dinner. Please don’t feel
overwhelmed with these requests in these difficult financial times! Do what you
can, not what you can’t. With everyone pulling together, all these worthy
endeavors will be a great success for our generous St. Joseph’s Parish family!
