(whole group) Show students the encyclopedia made by other students. Tell them that we are going to create a class-wide encyclopedia and come up with some ideas to make this even better! http://wilburnes.wcpss.net/yoder/abc/biomain.html
Show students how to access Britannica and guide them to Encyclopedia Britannica’s Guide to Black
History. http://www.school.eb.com/blackhistory
(Individual work) Instruct students that they will have the period to browse through the biography section, but by the end of their time, they must select two people and answer the following questions for each person.
Be sure to talk about reading for information and give a few hints.
***You might need to break the time down to 20 minutes of browsing, 20 of finding information about two possible research candidates. Also even though the idea is to create an online encyclopedia I’m not worried about repeating people, my guess is they will have more interest in researching someone they care about.
Also later classes can look at the list and then we can say they have to choose someone different***
Who is it?
Why are they important?
When did they live?
, Morning work, Writing Homework or Community circle : Let students write or tell about who they are going to learn more about. It might be handy to allow them access to their work.
Whole Group - Show the note sheet to students and explain the questions on each part. Review how to access the Encyclopedia Britannica Black History Guide and how to search on Britannica Elementary
Encyclopedia. Not all names are listed in the elementary edition so it is important to show students how to access the school wide edition.
Individual work – Assist students with questions about the note sheet and monitor their progress.
, Morning work, Writing Homework or Community circle : Let students discuss one interesting fact they discovered about the person they are researching and allow them to share an idea that will improve our encyclopedia.
Whole Group Use day three to demonstrate Timeliner and be sure to have students save work as a jpeg on the shared drive in one folder. Later in the period, introduce Kidpix students and it’s basic functions. Have students draw a picture of the person they are researching in Kidpix. **** Students must export their picture as a jpeg. Have a folder ready for them on shared drive. ****
Individual work Allow students to finish up note sheet, complete timelines, or Kidpix picture.
, Morning work, Writing Homework or Community circle : Discuss with students how the encyclopedia is factual. Let students use their note sheet to write a paragraph about the person they researched. (Remind them , it must be factual) Bring these to the computer lab.
Whole Group
– Open Microsoft word to create the final encyclopedia article. Have students type their factual writing they began earlier that day. Show them how to import both the timeline and picture.
****Make sure to save each file as a webpage and have students save them in the same folder. Explain to students that their name should not be on the project and the file name should be the name of the person they are researching.
– Make sure student names are removed from files and hyperlink the documents to your webpage. Allow students to view their work online. Be sure to include a link in your weekly newsletter.
