JOB DESCRIPTION NEW STRUAN SCHOOL TITLE Social Care Worker LOCATION New Struan School Residencies ACCOUNTABLE TO Team Leader RESPONSIBILITY FOR STAFF None PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES Co-operate with the Team Leader in providing a happy stimulating, caring and secure home background for the young people together with a well-structured programme of leisure activities and social skills training for each individual young person. Do everything possible to help create good working relationships and full cooperation between care workers, teaching staff, administrative and domestic staff and part-time specialists. Play an active part in promoting good public relations in the locality so as to increase public awareness of, and support for, the aims and objectives of the Organisation as a whole and the community in particular. MAIN TASKS Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding for the socialisation for a young person with autism Collaborate in the assessment of each young person so that difficulties are identified and latent talents developed. Implement programmes of meaningful leisure or recreational activities for each Young person enabling them to acquire independence while at the same time encouraging them to integrate as a group. Ensure that each young person is given appropriate training in social skills 1 Keep adequate records of each young person’s progress and make regular reports as required by the Service Manager and Team Leader When required attend internal case conferences and keep written records. Maintain good working relationships with care, instructional, night and domestic staff. Maintain a high standard of good house keeping ensuring that bedrooms and other areas are kept clean and tidy. Become familiar with the organisation’s health, safety and fire regulations and ensure that they are strictly observed. In particular ensure that all drugs and medicines are securely locked out of the reach of young people and that drugs administered are entered in the drugs book provided. When necessary or appropriate, accompany residents to the dentist, doctor, hairdresser, on shopping expeditions, etc. Ensure that matters concerning individual young people and their families are kept strictly confidential to the residential office, community, its staff and school managers. Undertake any specific tasks delegated by the Service Manager. Provide appropriate guidance, support and structure to enable young people to benefit fully from the widest range of educational experiences. Provide such physical care as may be necessary when a young person is unwell. Foster good relationships with young person’s parents and families. There may be a Sleep-in requirement for which the appropriate Sleep-in Allowance will be paid. To carry out any other duties which may be agreed from time to time in discussions with Service Manager and which relate to a young persons’ welfare and development. ACCOUNTABILITY FOR RESOURCES Finance To follow directions necessary to comply with budgetary control and complete stock and other records as required. To obtain and distribute pocket money for young person and ensure that it is used in a suitable manner. Materials To ensure that young people have a proper diet and are suitably clothed. To ensure that a stock of items necessary for general and personal hygiene is maintained and economically used. To report any deficiencies in stocks of drugs and first aid items. To comply with standard procedures in regard to the administration of medicines. Property & Equipment To ensure that any damage or deficiencies to the building, furniture and other equipment are noted in the Repair and Maintenance book. Where such damage or deficiency constitutes a hazard, to ensure that action is taken to remove such hazard. Professional Practice To ensure that professional standards are constantly maintained in accordance with the basic philosophy and operational policy of the Scottish Autism. RELATIONSHIPS To establish and maintain good working relationships with all staff. To provide adequate opportunity for consultation in matters of disagreement and take such steps as might be necessary to ensure that a satisfactory level of professional practice is maintained. ADDITIONAL DUTIES It is in the nature of the work of the Social Care Worker that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises that tasks, which are not specifically covered in their job description, have to be undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and they will normally be compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or task becomes a regular or frequent part of the member of staff’s job, it will be included in the job description in consultation with the member of staff. Many of the organisation’s services are provided over a 24-hour period and consequently there may be a requirement of a work pattern that includes shift work, irregular hours or sleepover shifts.
