EDUCATION SERVICES

Classroom Assistant

ACCOUNTABLE TO:
Class Teacher
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST
 To assist and support the class teacher in carrying out individual
programmes drawn up by the teacher and professional staff geared to
each child’s particular needs.
 Do everything possible to help create good working relationships and
full co-operation between classroom assistants, care workers, team
leaders, teaching staff, administrative and domestic staff and part-time
specialists.
 Play an active part in promoting good public relations in the locality so
as to increase public awareness of, and support for, the aims and
objectives of the Organisation as a whole and the community in
particular.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Classroom Duties

Working with individual children and small groups to consolidate the wide
range of skills taught by the teacher.

Contributing to discussions and planning meetings on all aspects of
classroom practice

Working as part of a class team to ensure the safety and welfare of the
pupils

Assisting the class teacher in the practical arrangements of the school
day

Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding for the communication and
socialisation challenges for a young person with autism

Support the teacher to keep adequate records of each young person’s
progress and assessment

Maintain good working relationships with all staff

Become familiar and follow all organisation policies

When necessary or appropriate, accompany residents to the dentist,
doctor, hairdresser and on community learning experiences

Ensure that matters concerning individual young people and their families
are kept strictly confidential

Undertake any specific tasks delegated by the Teacher or Leadership
Team

Provide appropriate guidance, support and structure to enable young
people to benefit fully from the widest range of educational experiences

Foster good relationships with young person’s parents and families.

To carry out any other duties which may be agreed from time to time in
discussions with the class teacher and leadership team and which relate
to a young persons’ welfare and development.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Co-operate with all school staff in maintaining good relationships with
outside agencies and the general public in order to uphold the image of
the Organisation and increase support for its work.

Attend such staff meetings, conferences and courses as may be required
by the Head Teacher additional to normal duties in order to maintain
continuity of standards and also to attend such in-service training as
necessary.

Ensure the respect, dignity and rights to privacy of pupils as far as
possible.

Attend training courses and network meetings as appropriate to ensure
Continuous Professional Development

Carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job,
the title of the post and its grading

It is in the nature of the work of the New Struan School that tasks and
responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All
staff are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion
arises that tasks which are not specifically covered in their job description
have to be undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover
unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and they will normally be
compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or
task becomes a regular or frequent part of the member of staff’s job, it will
be included on the job description in consultation with the member of
staff.
CONFIDENTIALITY

Maintain confidentiality for all areas of Scottish Autism, its staff and its
work. The nature of the work within the school and centre entrusts people
with confidential information about the pupils, their families and staff.

 Fully participate in systems which ensure full attention to confidentiality, equal opportunity
and anti-discriminatory practice
 Seek to maintain and develop their own understanding of autism, its implications and
appropriate interventions
 Promote professional standards of service delivery in accordance with the Organisation’s
policies and procedures
 Ensure that all administrative functions appropriate to the post are carried out in accordance
with stated policy and procedure and that appropriate records are maintained
 Contribute to the appropriate management of challenging behaviours
 Work with and contribute to the appropriate support of volunteers
 Mentoring, guidance and support other staff with similar responsibilities
These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but highlight a number of the major tasks and
responsibilities of the post.
Many of the Organisation’s services are provided over a 24-hour period and consequently there
may be a requirement of a work pattern that includes shift work, irregular hours or sleepover
shifts.
Some posts may also include participation in an on-call rota.
