In collaboration with the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Case
Manger and multidisciplinary team, the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of
care needs and the development of programmes of care, and/or the implementation and
evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high quality care to neonates and
their families and mothers in transitional care The charge nurse will contribute to clinical
practice development and continuing professional development of the nursing team.

SCOPE AND RANGE
To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for babies
and their families in the neonatal unit and meet identified needs
Environment of Care
The neonatal intensive care unit provides a regional neonatal service for babies and their
families from throughout Tayside. The neonatal intensive care unit has 21 cots (4 intensive
care, 3 high dependency, 10 special care and 4 transitional care), and 4 transitional care
maternal beds. A neonatal case manager provides primary care liaison and community nursing
support. Neonatal Transport services for the North of Scotland are provided jointly with
Aberdeen.
Supervisory Responsibility
Band 6 Charge Nurse/Midwives will take charge of the neonatal unit on a frequent basis,
prioritising and allocating workload, supervising and supporting staff (5-8per shift). They will
jointly lead one of six teams and have responsibility for development/appraisal for three staff
members. Band 6 Nurses/Midwives will provide support and guidance to junior medical staff

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
 Care Delivery
1. Responsible for the supervision and assessment of care needs and the development,
implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for babies and their families
requiring all levels of neonatal care to ensure delivery of a high standard of care under the
direction of neonatal clinical guidelines

Provide care to very sick, unstable babies in the Neonatal Unit or during retrieval and
transport episodes utilising complex life support therapies
3.
Participate voluntarily in neonatal transport on call rota
4.
Participate in planned and emergency resuscitation of the newborn in labour suite
5.
Maintain and build on effective communication with parents/carers, relatives and other
members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared
and the needs of babies and their families are met.

Support the multidisciplinary team to involve parents/carers and relatives in planning and
delivery of individualised care
7.
Responsible for maintaining patient records within the agreed standards to ensure the care
management plan is communicated to parents/carers and the healthcare team. Ensure the

standards of record keeping are maintained by the team
8.
Maintain and build good relationships and a positive approach to families/carers and
relatives, refer them if necessary to the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services or senior medical
staff for any complaints, suggestions or questions they may have on their baby’s
condition
9.
Comply with and promote policies relating to Child Protection
10. Postholders with a qualification in midwifery who have submitted their Intention to
Practice to the NMC will carry out postnatal examinations and provide maternity care in
the transitional care area. Charge Nurses who have no qualification in midwifery or a
lapsed qualification will provide support and advice on referral pathways to midwives
caring for mothers in transitional care
11. Initiate, provide and support others to care for the terminally ill or dying baby and their
family and undertake last offices
 Management/Leadership
12. Take charge of the clinical area on a frequent basis, co-ordinating, organising and
prioritising workload to ensure that the interests of babies and their families are met
13. Demonstrates the ability to effectively use physical, human and financial resources,
promoting awareness amongst staff of the cost implications of their actions
14. Provides appropriate support to nursing/midwifery and junior medical staff, acting as a
role model and a source of advice to facilitate the delivery of safe and effective care
15. Undertake appraisal of junior staff
16. Identifies opportunities and contributes to processes influencing change to enhance
practice
17. In conjunction with the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, Clinical Nurse Specialists and
Case Manager, develop and maintain a nursing/midwifery team that will meet the needs
of the service
18. Assist in maintaining and promoting own and others health, safety and security and work
within NHS Tayside policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working
practices
19. Recognise and report incidents using IR1 forms/IT system
20. Identify the need for and contact appropriately skilled staff members to cover shifts using
bank staff, rearranged shifts as required to cover sickness or excess activity
21. Order medicines to ensure/maintain adequate stock levels

22. Participate in personal/career development plan to maintain and develop attitudes, skills
and knowledge, facilitating personal and professional growth in order to maximise
contribution to service delivery
23. Attend mandatory updates and maintain attendance record as dictated by service
requirements (breast feeding, neonatal and adult CPR, fire safety etc.)
24. Foster an environment of enquiry, education and support that is responsive to the service,
clinical developments and needs.
25. In partnership with the clinical nurse specialists, design, facilitate and actively participate

in teaching programmes for junior nursing and medical colleagues and learners using
mentorship and preceptorship, induction and orientation, appraisal and clinical
supervision.
26. Implement parent education and health promotion programmes to enable parents/carers
and families to become self caring in preparation for discharge and future development

27. Encourage awareness of best practice and participate in research programmes,
recognising the need for and promoting evidence based practice
28. Lead practice development initiatives through participation in clinical working groups
29. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team participate in the audit of standards of
care
30. Complete workload monitoring activity sheets
31. Work within an ethical and legal framework utilising defined policies, procedures,
standards and protocols of the department, organisation and the NHS Tayside to promote
safe and effective care and report quality issues to senior nursing staff
32. Actively participate in Clinical Governance, clinical effectiveness and risk management,
be proactive in implementing organisational agendas and strategies
33. Respond to formal and informal complaints raised by parents and staff

Communicates continuously with nursing staff and others in the multidisciplinary team about
all activities necessary to provide and maintain a safe functioning environment ensuring
effective, quality care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills:
 Handling, manoeuvring and positioning intensive care neonates with complex equipment
and management needs
 Administer intravenous injections and prescribed solutions via syringe pumps and infusion
devices
 Co-ordinating multiple infusions
 Capillary sampling from very preterm infants
Physical Demands:

DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
The Charge Nurse/Midwife will be responsible to the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, Senior
Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Case Manager for clinical guidance and
professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance
The Charge Nurse/Midwife will be responsible for co-ordinating the clinical environment on a
day-to-day basis. They will be responsible to the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, Senior
Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Case Manager to undertake duties as assigned to
contribute to the smooth running of the service
The Charge Nurse/Midwife will be responsible for supporting the nursing/midwifery team to
assess, monitor, evaluate and interpret patients’ condition
Deputise for the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services, Senior Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse
Specialist and Case Manager for decisions relating to management of physical, human and
financial resources

The terms and conditions of service for this post are
those determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £25783 to £34530
per annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the
scale on appointment is normally at the minimum but
may be higher subject to verification of previous relevant
service.
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 37.5 hours per week. Start and
finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of
16 and 70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of
superannuable pay, which is essentially basic pay
excluding, for example, overtime or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.13 are as
follows:

Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced
National Insurance contributions. NHS Tayside also
makes a substantial contribution towards scheme

After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for
part-time staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for
part-time staff) or 6.6 weeks per year
