SCOPE AND RANGE To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for babies and their families in the neonatal unit and meet identified needs Environment of Care The neonatal intensive care unit provides a regional neonatal service for babies and their families from throughout Tayside. The neonatal intensive care unit has 21 cots (4 intensive care, 3 high dependency, 10 special care and 4 transitional care), and 4 transitional care maternal beds. A neonatal case manager provides primary care liaison and community nursing support. Neonatal Transport services for the North of Scotland are provided jointly with Aberdeen. Supervisory Responsibility Band 6 Charge Nurse/Midwives will take charge of the neonatal unit on a frequent basis, prioritising and allocating workload, supervising and supporting staff (5-8per shift). They will jointly lead one of six teams and have responsibility for development/appraisal for three staff members. Band 6 Nurses/Midwives will provide support and guidance to junior medical staff Budgetary Responsibilities The post holder has responsibility for ensuring effective use of human resources, supplies and equipment 5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Care Delivery 1. Responsible for the supervision and assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for babies and their families requiring all levels of neonatal care to ensure delivery of a high standard of care under the direction of neonatal clinical guidelines 2. Provide care to very sick, unstable babies in the Neonatal Unit or during retrieval and transport episodes utilising complex life support therapies 3. Participate voluntarily in neonatal transport on call rota 4. Participate in planned and emergency resuscitation of the newborn in labour suite 5. Maintain and build on effective communication with parents/carers, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and the needs of babies and their families are met. 6. Support the multidisciplinary team to involve parents/carers and relatives in planning and delivery of individualised care 7. Responsible for maintaining patient records within the agreed standards to ensure the care management plan is communicated to parents/carers and the healthcare team. Ensure the 2 standards of record keeping are maintained by the team 8. Maintain and build good relationships and a positive approach to families/carers and relatives, refer them if necessary to the Senior Nurse Neonatal Services or senior medical staff for any complaints, suggestions or questions they may have on their baby’s condition 9. Comply with and promote policies relating to Child Protection 10. Postholders with a qualification in midwifery who have submitted their Intention to Practice to the NMC will carry out postnatal examinations and provide maternity care in the transitional care area. Charge Nurses who have no qualification in midwifery or a lapsed qualification will provide support and advice on referral pathways to midwives caring for mothers in transitional care 11. Initiate, provide and support others to care for the terminally ill or dying baby and their family and undertake last offices Management/Leadership 12. Take charge of the clinical area on a frequent basis, co-ordinating, organising and prioritising workload to ensure that the interests of babies and their families are met 13. Demonstrates the ability to effectively use physical, human and financial resources, promoting awareness amongst staff of the cost implications of their actions 14. Provides appropriate support to nursing/midwifery and junior medical staff, acting as a role model and a source of advice to facilitate the delivery of safe and effective care 15. References and CRB check satisfactory to the Trust General Conditions of Service POST REF NO: D/AC/67/13 JOB TITLE/GRADE: CHARGE NURSE BAND 6 LOCATION: NEONATAL UNIT, NINEWELLS HOSPITAL, DUNDEE Conditions of Service Remuneration Hours of Duty Superannuation The terms and conditions of service for this post are those determined by the NHS Staff Council. The current salary scale for the post is £25783 to £34530 per annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher subject to verification of previous relevant service. Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer. The hours of the post are 37.5 hours per week. Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the service. Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and 70 (65 in some instances). The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay, which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime or travelling expenses.
