STAFF NURSE – NEONATAL UNIT JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Experienced Staff Nurse Grade: Band 6 Salary Scale: £24,549.60 - £35,747 per annum inclusive. Annual Leave: 27 days per annum plus bank holidays. Hours: 37.5 per week Responsible To: Sister, Neonatal Unit Accountable To: Senior Nurse Manager, Neonatal Unit Minimum Qualifications: RN/RSCN/RM (with approved Neonatal Course) Job Summary To utilise and further develop specialist skills in order to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care. To promote a friendly and supportive atmosphere for parents and relatives in which they can learn to care for their babies. To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with the neonate’s family/carers, the multidisciplinary team, other departments with the Trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation. To actively participate in and contribute to the management of the clinical area. To act as a mentor, teaching and supervising junior staff including, student nurses, student midwives, and health care support workers. 1. Clinical Responsibilities 1.1 Using evidence-based practice and a holistic approach to individualised nursing care, assess plan, implement and evaluate care for babies within a defined clinical area. 1.2 To actively support and promote the involvement of parents/carers in the planning, management and evaluation of care by working together in partnership. 1.3 To establish and maintain effective communications with parents and relatives, from admission, ensuring they have sufficient confidence, assistance and support to enable them to care for their baby in preparation for discharge. 1.4 To be an advocate for the neonate and to promote good liaisons and effective communication with all members of the multi disciplinary team. 1.5 To adhere to and actively participate in the regular review of nursing practice, policies, procedures and protocols. 1.6 To safely administer prescribed medications and to monitor their effects. 1.7 To ensure competency and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility. 1.8 To participate in research projects. 1.9 To assist and supervise in the orientation of new staff and learners to the Unit. 1.10 To actively promote Health Education in the Unit. 2. Education, Training and Personal Development 2.1 To attend and participate in the in-service multidisciplinary teaching programme as well as the Trust Mandatory training. 2.2 To keep abreast with all aspects of Neonatal Nursing, current research and clinical developments. 2.3 To be responsible for the appraisal of own performance, identifying training and development needs. 2.4 To demonstrate and build on achieved competencies in neonatal nursing. 2.5 To develop and utilise clinical supervision and reflective practice skills. 2.6 To participate in the education and act as link assessor for student nurses/midwives by acting as mentor/preceptor/role model and through discussion, supervised practice and tutorials. 3. Management of Resources 3.1 To assist the senior (lead) nurse in managing the resources required in the provision of neonatal care. 3.2 To participate in departmental meeting. 3.3 To participate in all aspects of clinical governance. 4. Professional Responsibilities 4.1 To maintain personal records of continuing professional development in order to meet PREP requirements. 4.2 To promote a professional image at all times and to accountable for own clinical practice. 4.3 To ensure appropriate documentation of care is in accordance with NMC guidelines. 4.4 To act in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct for Nurse, Midwives and Health Visitors. 4.5 To ensure confidentiality at all times, only relating confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity. 5.
