EQUAL ACCESS TO PROMOTION What you need to know before you apply Audience: Equal Access to Promotion is intended to support greater promotion pathways for Black and Minority Ethnic teachers. It is open to school-based teachers from black and minority ethnic teachers with middle management/leadership roles/responsibilities who wish to develop their leadership skills and understanding and//or are considering taking on further leadership responsibilities. To be eligible to apply applicants need to be in their fourth to twelfth year of teaching. It is not suitable for current or post NPQH teachers and deputy headteachers. Participant Guidance – Pre-Application Is EAP for me? EAP is targeted at black and minority ethnic teachers (BME) who aspire to more senior leadership roles and responsibilities. The following statements and questions should be considered before completing the application form. Participants should typically have between 4-12 years of recent teaching experience and consider themselves to hold posts of middle leadership responsibility in school. Participants should be considering their professional goals/aims for the future and should want to take the next steps to achieve these. Participants should have additional responsibilities in a middle leadership role which have given them an appetite for more senior leadership? Participants should have discussed their ambitions with a member of the senior leadership team and/or be ready to initiate this professional conversation. What will you be expected to do during EAP? The EAP programme is in three parts. Participants are expected to complete all three aspects. EAP is a mix of blended learning which includes a self-directed Leadership Development Study. 1. Initial Seminar: Friday 23 October and Saturday 24 October 2015. This part of the programme is residential and takes place at the NUT’s training centre, Stoke Rochford Hall. 2. Guided school-based Leadership Development Study which is an inquiry into a leadership issue and involves self-directed study 3. Final Seminar: Friday 13 June 2016. This one day follow-up allows participants to present their learning journey and reflect on the challenges and opportunities with other members of the group to take the next steps to senior leadership roles. A key element of the final sessions of the residential programme is the opportunity to design a Leadership Study. During the period between the initial and final seminars the facilitator team will be able to provide challenge and guidance where necessary to ensure participants complete the study requirements. The EAP programme acknowledges that barriers to promotion exist in individual schools and to the wider system but focuses on individual strategies and tools to overcome such barriers. Participants will want to consider: Do you have the commitment to complete all three parts of the programme, including the Leadership Development Study which is a core component of the EAP programme? You may want to include the EAP programme to support part of your professional/leadership development target within your appraisal. Support from the school When applying for a place on EAP we ask participants to seek agreement from their head teacher/CPD co-ordinator. We have found that the course has benefited teachers who have support from the school the most. If you experience difficulties in negotiating support and being able to attend the course the NUT will seek to help you overcome this. Once you have been accepted on the course we will send a letter to the named contact informing them about what is involved on the programme, particularly around the Leadership Development Study. Below are a series of questions which could help to frame your thoughts on why you wish the school to support your application to EAP. In the course of the professional conversation, you may agree targets, or consider new areas for development as a potential outcome of being on the programme. 1. 2. 3. 4. What are your leadership goals/aims for the future What have you identified those specific aims/goals? What actions do you need to take to help you achieve your goals/aims? What support do you need to from the school to complete your Leadership Development Study 5. Who will you negotiate any practicalities with? 6. Summary points from the pre-application conversation with headteacher or CPD coordinator about applying for the EAP programme. Declaration: I have noted the relevant dates and details and I am making a commitment to take part in all parts of the course if I am offered a place. I have the support of the headteacher/inset co-ordinator with regards to this application and that appropriate cover will be available if I am offered a place.
