Recycling and Waste Management Sub Group
Progress Report May 2007 to September 2007.
The first meeting of the sub group was held in May 2007 and the following
developments have taken place since:
1. During May, June and July the House Services Recycling maps were
amended to include pictures of sites. The maps include an icon of the
Wastewise logo and when the viewer clicks on the icon a picture of the
site comes up with a list of recyclables that are collected.
2. The students left residences during the first week of June and the amount
of waste left was extensive. An approach was made to the Salvation Army
Trading Company for textile and shoe recycling banks. S.A.T.C. supported
the application and is reengineering their recycling banks. Awaiting
confirmation to progress and confirm a date for delivery.
3. In early June a CD recycling campaign was launched using the weekly
email service. A little late for the students but will be repeated someway
into next term.
4. An Action Aid Toner cartridge and mobile phone recycling bank was sited
in the Arts Centre.12 sacks of used toner cartridges and mobile
telephones was collected by Action Aid on 12/9/07.
5. In June two submissions were forwarded to WAG for recycling sack holder
in residences kitchens and for a waste composter. Both applications were
declined.
6. Following negotiations with Ceredigion County Council ten 240 litre
recycling banks were donated to the university that have been used for
plastic bottle and can banks across the estate.
7. In July the cost of waste disposal was market tested by comparing the
cost of the current contractor (Ceredigion County Council) with an
alternative supplier (Biffa Waste Services). The outcome is that the local
authority remains competitive.
8. On 1st August WAG informs that additional funding has been obtained for
the Public Sector Recycling Equipment fund and the submission for a
waste composter in the sum of £25,000 is successful.
9. In early August a meeting was convened with officers of Ceredigion
County Council to discuss the possibility of providing a mixed recyclables
bag scheme for university owned residences
10. In August the new visualisation building was handed over. 25 recycling
bins have been located in individual office to recycle paper.
11. In August and early September around 450 computer systems were
reused / recycled by Cefni Computers from public workstation rooms.
12. At the end of August2007, as a trial, a battery recycling bank has been
sited in the Hugh Owen Library to take AA, AAA and other small dry cell
batteries.
13. Early September saw the delivery of 200 Waste Recycler sack holders to
be used in residence kitchens at Cwrt Mawr, Rosser, Trefloyne, Brynderw,
Pantycelyn and Penbryn. The bins are funded from RHS and are to be
used with the Council lilac bag scheme. The bin lids of the waste recycler
sack holders have the Wastewise sticker fitted and a notice is displayed in
each kitchen. It is proposed to extend the use of the waste recycler sack
holder to other university managed residences and discussions are on
going with the owners.
