Recycling and Waste Management Sub Group Progress Report May 2007 to September 2007. The first meeting of the sub group was held in May 2007 and the following developments have taken place since: 1. During May, June and July the House Services Recycling maps were amended to include pictures of sites. The maps include an icon of the Wastewise logo and when the viewer clicks on the icon a picture of the site comes up with a list of recyclables that are collected. 2. The students left residences during the first week of June and the amount of waste left was extensive. An approach was made to the Salvation Army Trading Company for textile and shoe recycling banks. S.A.T.C. supported the application and is reengineering their recycling banks. Awaiting confirmation to progress and confirm a date for delivery. 3. In early June a CD recycling campaign was launched using the weekly email service. A little late for the students but will be repeated someway into next term. 4. An Action Aid Toner cartridge and mobile phone recycling bank was sited in the Arts Centre.12 sacks of used toner cartridges and mobile telephones was collected by Action Aid on 12/9/07. 5. In June two submissions were forwarded to WAG for recycling sack holder in residences kitchens and for a waste composter. Both applications were declined. 6. Following negotiations with Ceredigion County Council ten 240 litre recycling banks were donated to the university that have been used for plastic bottle and can banks across the estate. 7. In July the cost of waste disposal was market tested by comparing the cost of the current contractor (Ceredigion County Council) with an alternative supplier (Biffa Waste Services). The outcome is that the local authority remains competitive. 8. On 1st August WAG informs that additional funding has been obtained for the Public Sector Recycling Equipment fund and the submission for a waste composter in the sum of £25,000 is successful. 9. In early August a meeting was convened with officers of Ceredigion County Council to discuss the possibility of providing a mixed recyclables bag scheme for university owned residences 10. In August the new visualisation building was handed over. 25 recycling bins have been located in individual office to recycle paper. 11. In August and early September around 450 computer systems were reused / recycled by Cefni Computers from public workstation rooms. 12. At the end of August2007, as a trial, a battery recycling bank has been sited in the Hugh Owen Library to take AA, AAA and other small dry cell batteries. 13. Early September saw the delivery of 200 Waste Recycler sack holders to be used in residence kitchens at Cwrt Mawr, Rosser, Trefloyne, Brynderw, Pantycelyn and Penbryn. The bins are funded from RHS and are to be used with the Council lilac bag scheme. The bin lids of the waste recycler sack holders have the Wastewise sticker fitted and a notice is displayed in each kitchen. It is proposed to extend the use of the waste recycler sack holder to other university managed residences and discussions are on going with the owners. 14. Food waste trial started on 10 September for one week to determine the volume of food waste disposed by the Arts Centre in order to gauge the size of composter required.
