You will be one of five consultants (4.7WTE) providing a combined supra-regional specialist Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology service to Central and the whole of the West of Scotland. A new children’s hospital is currently being built at the Southern General Hospital campus, co-located with maternity and adult services and will open 2014-15. The post holder will have an equally shared responsibility with consultant colleagues for the provision of a specialist diagnostic service for surgical biopsies, foetal, stillbirth and neonatal post-mortems, post-mortems of older children and adolescents and post-mortems undertaken on behalf of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. . The surgical material includes a wide range of biopsies from the specialist oncology, renal, gastroenterology, metabolic, orthopaedic and surgical units currently located at Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill. Regular meetings are held with specialist units (e.g. Renal, Gastroenterology, Orthopaedic, Surgical, Fetal Medicine, Genetics, ENT etc). The appointee would be expected to play a full part in any such meetings and also the regular Paediatric Review and Audit Meeting (PRAMS) and Perinatal mortality meetings. Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. You will be appropriately experienced and qualified in the specialty and those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry at the date of interview. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Acute Services Division Further Particulars of Post of Consultant in Paediatric/Perinatal Pathology Based at Southern General Hospital, Glasgow NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the UK’s largest provider of NHS health care in Acute, Primary and Community Health, Mental Health, Addiction and Homelessness Services. We serve a population of 1.2 million covering 8 local authority areas which include the City of Glasgow as well as incorporating both urban and rural areas from East Dunbartonshire to Inverclyde. There are eight major teaching hospital sites plus seven other hospital sites, providing teaching and research facilities for medical, nursing and allied health professions. Resources within Glasgow are being concentrated on three sites (Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel and Southern General Campuses) to create centres of excellence for surgical, medical and emergency care. One location in particular - the new South Glasgow acute hospital at the Southern General Campus - will be among the largest in the UK. A new specialist children’s hospital will also be located on the Southern site. The adult and children's hospitals will be integrated within a single building, albeit with separate entrances and building identities. The Golden Jubilee Hospital is a stand-alone health authority and does not therefore come within the management remit of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde although pathology services are provided by NHSGGC. HOSPITAL(S) AND CLINIC(S) WHERE SERVICES ARE TO BE PROVIDED Since May 2012, all Pathology services for NHS Glasgow and Clyde are provided from a single new laboratory on the Southern General Campus. In addition, a hot lab has been retained at RHSC, Yorkhill for intra-operative biopsies until the new Children’s Hospital opens on the Southern General Campus in 2015. The pathology services of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are part of the Laboratory Medicine Department of the Diagnostic Directorate which forms part of the Acute Services Division. The Director of the Diagnostics Directorate is Ms. Aileen McLennan and the General Manager for Laboratories is Ms Isobel Neil, supported by an Associate Medical Director, Dr Rachel Green and Clinical Director for Laboratories Dr Craig Williams. The Head of Service for Pathology is Dr. Margaret Burgoyne. This post is for a Consultant Paediatric/Perinatal Pathologist and will be based at the Southern General Hospital. 2. THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY a) Diagnostic Pathology The Department of Pathology provides a comprehensive Pathology service for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. It also provides a regional and national pathology service in key areas particularly Ophthalmic Pathology, Neuropathology and Paediatric Pathology. Specimens are received from all anatomical areas. There are dedicated facilities within the department for core histology, specialist histology, cytology (both gynaecological, non-gynaecological and andrology), immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. Molecular diagnostics have recently co-located with Department of Genetics within the new Laboratory on the SGH Campus. This service will be NSD (national Services Division) funded from April 2013. The department has new equipment as part of a Managed Service Contract (MSC) supplied by Abbott. There is a specimen tracking system (Cerebro) linked to the Laboratory Information System (Telepath) The department is organised on a Specialist Team basis. The specialist Teams are Autopsy, Bone & Soft Tissue, Breast, Cardiothoracic, Dermatopathology, Gastro-intestinal, Gynaecological, Head & Neck, Haematolymphoid, Ophthalmic, Renal, Urology, Gynaecological Cytology, Non-gynaecological (Diagnostic) Cytology, Neuropathology and Paediatric/Perinatal Pathology. The current Paediatric/Perinatal workload (2012-13) comprises approximately 340 foetal, stillbirth, neonatal, infant, childhood and adolescent post-mortems per annum, of which approximately 50 are undertaken on behalf of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), 4,600 surgical biopsies and placentas. The successful candidate will be one of 48 consultants with 24 trainees in histopathology. The Department is involved in various aspects of the MB ChB and BDS curricula. There is a ‘Mechanisms of Disease’ module in the BSc (Hons) Medical Science course. Where appropriate the appointee will contribute to these areas. b) The Post in Pathology This is a new post, based in Department of Pathology, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow for a consultant in Paediatric/Perinatal Pathology to join the existing 4 (3.7WTE) Paediatric/Perinatal Pathology consultants to provide a combined supra-regional specialist Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology service to Central and the whole of the West of Scotland. The successful candidate will be expected to take an active part in perinatal mortality meetings at maternity units within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and surrounding Health Board areas for which the perinatal pathology service is provided. Duties of the post include: The post holder will have an equally shared responsibility with consultant colleagues for the provision of a specialist diagnostic service for surgical biopsies, foetal, stillbirth and neonatal post-mortems, post-mortems of older children and adolescents and post-mortems undertaken on behalf of the COPFS. The surgical material includes a wide range of biopsies from the specialist oncology, renal, gastroenterology, metabolic, orthopaedic and surgical units currently located at Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill. (RHSC,Yorkhill) The Department plans to re-establish a clinic for ciliary beat frequency analysis for children with suspected ciliary dyskinesia in April 2013. The Neuropathology service, including muscle, nerve pathology is undertaken by colleagues within the Pathology Department, however, perinatal neuropathology is provided by the paediatric/perinatal pathologists. Forensic Neuropathology services are provided by Neuropathologists based in Edinburgh as part of the COPFS contract. Discussions are ongoing with a neighbouring Health Board to establish an SLA (Service Level Agreement) to provide of Paediatric/perinatal pathology services. The SLA with COPFS is currently being re-negotiated but in future will include examinations previously undertaken in Edinburgh. (additional 20-30 cases per annum) RHSC, Yorkhill is the Scottish centre for paediatric renal transplantation and paediatric cardiac surgery. The Paediatric/perinatal pathologists currently provide out of hours/on-call for urgent post-mortem examinations, clinical advice and handling of fresh specimens. Clinical Meetings and Audit The Paediatric/perinatal pathologists hold regular meetings with specialist units (e.g. Renal, Gastroenterology, Orthopaedic, Surgical, Fetal Medicine, Genetics, ENT etc). These meetings are currently heald at RHSC, Yorkhill but will transfer to SGH, Campus in 2015. The appointee would be expected to play a full part in any such meetings and also the regular Paediatric Review and Audit Meeting (PRAMS) and Perinatal mortality meetings in the hospital and outside maternity units. Teaching The appointee would be expected to take an active part in (i) the training and supervision of the Specialist Registrar(s) in Paediatric Pathology and general and forensic pathology trainees on rotation; this will be undertaken as part of DCC activity (ii) the teaching of undergraduates and post-graduates attached to the clinical departments (iii) teaching of Department BMS staff as part of their CPD programme. Research An interest in research would be desirable but not essential. Any research undertaken is subject to approval by the West of Scotland Research Ethics Service and would require to be funded appropriately at source. Other External Commitments /Continuing Professional Development: The appointee will be expected to take an active part in appropriate EQA’s CME/CPD activities as specified by the RCPath, including relevant quality assurance schemes, clinical audit and the advancement of medical knowledge through contribution to appropriate learned societies. Local meetings are also convened in the department for both Paediatric Pathology consultant peers and trainees with which the appointee will be asked to contribute to. Co-operation with external case review is also mandatory, e.g. UKCCLG etc. Health & Safety: The successful appointee will be required to comply with Health Board Health and Safety Policies. The successful candidate will be expected to be on the specialist register or be eligible for entry to it, with a CCST/ CCT in paediatric pathology. c) The University Department of Pathology: The University Pathology Unit was integrated into the new Institute of Cancer Sciences in August 2010 when the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences was established. The Pathology Unit is headed up by Professor Massimo Pignatelli, St Mungo-Notman Professor of Pathology and Head of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and Health Care. The restructuring of the university has resulted in the development of strength in focused areas that has over the last few years resulted in a major building programme and investment in junior and senior academic appointments. The Institute of Cancer Sciences is part of a national centre of excellence in the fight against cancer. It is a partner with the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, which together form the core of cancer research in Glasgow. Together, there are currently 38 research groups housed in magnificent new research buildings at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and the CRUK clinical trials unit (CTU). The Translational Research Centre, due to open in 2012, will provide excellent facilities for an expanded programme of translational cancer research in Glasgow. The University Pathology unit is based in the new laboratory block at the South Glasgow Hospital and is also integrated with the Beatson Research Institute at Garscube. The current establishment in Pathology is a Professor, four Clinical Senior Lecturers (of which two posts are currently vacant and will be advertised in 2012), 1 Clinical Lecturer, three non-clinical research fellows.The underlying principle of the unit is that research findings should lead to a better understanding of disease mechanisms and have wide societal benefit. It is recognised that Pathology underpins the evaluation of novel molecular markers in cells and tissues and the development and implementation of safe and effective innovative treatments. Our research activities combine advanced morphological assessment of tissue and cells with molecular and cellular-based research to develop and validate diagnostic and prognostic markers through pre-clinical and clinical studies. Facilities include tissue-microarray production, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, mutational analysis from fresh and paraffinembedded sections. The unit has a major commitment to teaching and training in Pathology to over 1000 undergraduate students in medicine, dentistry and life sciences. Members of the unit also contribute, together with the NHS colleagues, to the provision of pathology services within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. All the research facilities in the Unit are available to the appointee.
