PETRIE LOG - Edition 11/13 – July 24, 2013 From the Principal Positivity Being positive is a personal trait I hold very highly. I strongly believe in the value of being positive and always being able to create a positive atmosphere around me. I know it’s contagious. I have been speaking with students and staff over the last three weeks about positiveness. Where does the word positive come from in the English language? For western cultures, the term "positive" derives from a Latin word meaning "settled by arbitrary agreement" or imposed, rather than a natural expression. The term "negative" derives from a Latin word signifying negation or denial. Over the centuries, being positive as a personal trait has moved into the English language to describe people who “look at the best of things”. When I speak with students about being positive I emphasise the personal trait of being happy and positive. I also emphasise the important understanding that it is ok to feel sad and unhappy. We all need to be able to deal with these types of emotions. To be positive at all times is very difficult, however I strongly believe that if we look hard at ourselves and look hard at what we think and how we think about situations and then look for the best, we tend to be able to handle situations so much better. Is this optimism? What is your attitude like? Do you use negative labels? Are you an example of optimism? Do you “look on the bright side”? Creative Generation Big congratulations to the Creative Generation students. This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students to shine in a great production surrounded by so many other talented students from across Queensland State Schools. Our staff and parents who escorted and supervised our students went above and beyond. Thankyou. Staff Professional Development On Wednesday afternoon, all of our staff were involved in a Twilight Professional Development activity from 3.30 to 6.00 pm in the school library. The development of the Petrie Pedagogical Framework was at the forefront of this afternoon. A Pedagogical Framework is simply the plan for how we teach the curriculum, how we plan to teach the curriculum, how we assess what the students know, how do we know we are doing this well and what do we need to do to keep improving? The Petrie Pedagogical Framework is the platform from which we as a teaching and learning organisation work from. I intend to ensure all of our school community is informed of this framework and also ask for feedback in its development. The focus of the Petrie Pedagogical Framework is of course every day, in every classroom, every student is learning and achieving. This is our school vision and what all of my colleagues here at Petrie are accountable for. I look forward to the framework’s development. Kind regards John From the Deputy Principal The annual School Opinion Survey will be occurring in our school over the next two weeks, and will obtain opinion information from samples of parents/caregivers and students and all school staff. All survey participants are encouraged to complete their survey to ensure that their opinion is included in our schools’ reports, which we will receive later this year. The reports will help our school and Education Queensland to further understand how to better meet the needs of our community. The Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home to families by the end of this week. Participants are randomly selected using a formula provided to schools. The survey can be completed either online or using the paper form provided. Parents are requested to return completed survey forms, or to complete the survey online by Friday, 2 August. Selected students will complete their survey online at school and all school staff will be provided with access details to complete their survey online. Survey queries can be directed to the school on 3285 0333. We are still taking enrolments for Prep for 2014. Children born between 1st July 2008 and 30th June 2009 will be the correct age for Prep in 2014. Please contact the school for further information. Deborah made delicious boomerang shaped biscuits decorated with icing dots. Lloyd an Aboriginal artist visited our school to talk about Aboriginal customs and art. Mr Bray showed Preps a video of his daily drive to school in Arnhem Land. He was really good at avoiding the crocodiles! The children had a wonderful week. Class Work Purchased by P&C Funds On Wednesday the 17th of July Prep A celebrated their 100th day at school. With support from our wonderful parent volunteers the students participated in a variety of 100 themed activities. Some of our fun learning projects included: painting portraits of ourselves as 100 year olds, creating a paper chain 100 links long that we used for counting and measuring, stamping 100 gumballs into gumball machines, building Lego creations with 100 Lego blocks and reading 100th day stories. We wrote about what we would do if we had $100 and decorated special glasses to wear with our 100 day badges. As part of our History curriculum we looked at photos to remind us how we looked on Day One when we first started Prep. To finish our fabulous 100th day we shared a special cake made by Mrs Richards, one of our Prep A mums, and it was delicious! Attention Prep Parents As you begin the journey of listening to your children read, you may have questions such as: “What should I do if my daughter seems too tired to read?” “It’s a struggle to get my son to read. How can I do this without it becoming a battle?” “Why can’t my daughter read an easy word like ‘and’ when she can read “computer’?” Find out the answers to questions such as these and learn about the five steps to stress-free reading with your children at a demonstration by our Learning Support Teacher, on Tuesday 30 July from 9.00am to 9.30am. Our school was involved in Creative Generation at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre over three days last week. Each year, the most talented dancers, performers, singers and musicians from Queensland state schools come together to stage one of the state's biggest performing arts events. More than 1500 students from across Queensland showcase their talent by starring in the professionally produced show alongside some of Queensland's leading professional artists. Our students were part of the massed choir of 600 voices. They performed the three hour show five times over the two days for packed audiences, including many of our parents and families. Luke Kennedy (runner up - “The Voice” 2013) was a featured artist and we got to meet him backstage where he signed our CD’s and programs. What did you enjoy most about Creative Generation 2013? Emma – I liked it when the streamers came down on us while we were dancing on the main arena. Jack – I loved watching the different acts. My favourite was the silver people. Rhiannon – I loved performing on the stage for a big audience. Montana – I loved the smoke and laser lights. The students had a wonderful time performing. We would like our school to be involved again in 2014 for the 10th Anniversary of Creative Generation. If your child will be in Year 4 – 7 next year and would like to be a member of the massed choir, please let me know. The Creative Generation Performance will be shown nationally on Channel 10 on Saturday 5 October at 2.30pm. Wendy Rose (Music Teacher) A message from the Tuckshop Do you want to help out at the Tuckshop, but can’t because you have pre-school aged children? One idea that might help to solve this problem is:Why not form a group with, say, 4 other parents from your class? You could then work out a roster so that each week, 1 or 2 of the group would baby sit while the other 2 helps out in the tuckshop. This would not only widen your circle of friends, it would allow your children to mix with others around the same age. If this sounds like something that would work for you, take charge and approach some of the parents when dropping off in the morning, or while waiting for your child in the afternoon. Some may be too shy to start the conversation. Or do you know an Aunty or Grandma that is at a loose end during the week? A blue card is required for anyone other than a parent but can easily be organised through the school office at no cost. If you would like to help out in the tuckshop, please contact Debbie on 3285 0303, or call in to the tuckshop on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Even if it is only for an hour at some time during the day, it would be very much appreciated. We have a fun time whilst preparing healthy, nutritious meals for the children. We even have time to stop for a cuppa and a laugh most days. STUDENT BANKING Stay cool at school this summer by saving in Term 3 of School Banking! Win a CommBank Marquee for your school or an iPad mini for yourself just by depositing to your CommBank School Banking Account. Chappy News Hi there Chappy supporters, I hope that you are all well. Here at Petrie State School, there are two main things happening with regards to chaplaincy and if you can help in any way I would really appreciate it. The first thing is that I will be starting a vegetable garden with some of the children in the school. This will be an opportunity for some of the children who are struggling in the classroom to have an opportunity to be outside doing something constructive and rewarding. I am hoping that by having this as an outlet it will help them be more focused when they have to be in the classroom. So if you have any vegetable seedlings or seeds or any kind of gardening equipment that would be greatly appreciated. The other thing is that Chappy Pete (Chaplain from Strathpine and the previous chaplain from Petrie) and I have the opportunity to run the canteen at the Pine Rivers Athletics Carnival as a fundraiser on the 05 and 06 August. We will be serving breakfast and lunch and snacks and drinks throughout the day. We need people to help us in the canteen on those two days. It would not have to be the whole two days but a few hours on either of the days would be fantastic. We would also love donations of any sort which would mean that our profits will be bigger and that will all go straight back into our chaplain account and so back into the schools. If you could help in anyway with these two projects please let me know, Thank you all for your support, Bev Brown 0404 352 612 Community News Tennis Lessons The School with the highest percentage of active students making at least one school banking deposit in term 3 will win a marquee.
