LETTER FROM THE TRENCHES
Role: You are a soldier fighting in World War I. You may choose to be from any country
involved in the war at the time the letter is dated (1916). Remember 1st person writing is
required!
Audience: A family member at home
Format: A friendly letter
Topic: Conditions of WWI fighting and your feelings as a soldier.
Your letter can be dated anytime during the year 1916. Imagine you have been fighting in
the war for over one year, and while you are in the trenches, you have the opportunity to
write home to a loved one. Describe how things are going for you and express your
emotions and feelings toward the war.
Your letter must:
 Follow a friendly letter format (see below)
 Describe 3 clear and accurate facts about World War I. One of the facts must
include a war technology.
 Contain a minimum of eight sentences.
 Give a clear indication of which side you are fighting on.
 Express emotions about living and fighting in the war.
