Kriti Gallery and Artist in Residency was
started in 2004 by Navneet Raman, who
origins from Varanasi even though he
prefers to be called a Banarsi!
With his interest in his home town, the
heritage and culture it is his vision to
create a place and space for interaction
with art.
In 2008 he was joined by Petra Manefeld,
Germany, who is in charge of events and
collaborations.

Kriti runs a gallery and art residency. Over the past 7 years Kriti established a
place for artists and the local audience to interact with art and artists. In the
gallery we show contemporary art from all over the world and all fields of arts; fine
arts, photography, installations and traditional Indian art, there are music/dance
concerts and lectures. So far we hosted about 60 artists over the years from all
fields of art, the artists stayed with us for a minimum of one month but an average
of 4-6 months.
Kriti works actively with local educational institutions e.g. Banaras Hindu
University and schools, e.g. for workshops, art talks and gallery/artist visit.
Kriti collaborates with other artist projects in other Indian cities e.g. miniature
painting workshops in Udaipur, photo shootings in Mumbai or Calcutta etc..
With our networks in the city as well as across India we are supporting the artists,
their ideas as well as the realization of their projects.
Next to the residency and gallery, Varanasi being a wealthy city of culture,
religion, spirituality and heritage we started also the visual archives for the city
as our personal interests are very much in photography, visual arts and music. We
welcome all kind of arts to the gallery and residency.
The residency is located about 3km away from the river, 10 min by bicycle rickshaw,
surrounded by a big garden for contemplation, reading, gatherings and work. We are in
a semi-modern residential area with shops, hospital and traffic around us.
For the artist in residency application it’s our interest to invite artists who are
eager to interact with the local culture and life. Please share some information
about your artistic work so far, an artist statement/resumee and let us know what you
would like to work on during your stay in the residency.
About the residency,
life in the residency is like a commune, a big family working and living with private
space but also common space. We organize trips in the area, go for walks in the city,
see Bollywood movies or local concerts, have dinners or go for a party. It all
depends on the initiative of the people, however the liking is!
There is the common dining space in the kitchen, the garden and it’s sitting spaces
and a washing machine.

The monthly fee includes provisions for breakfast/ snacks; vegetarian only lunches
and dinners (cooked Monday through Saturday), fully furnished accommodation,
electricity, water. Includes airport pick up and a city walk upon arrival.
The minimum stay is 1 month and longer. Applications are possible all year round, no
dealines.
We are happy to support your applications for grants with other institutions with a
letter of support, same for visas.
