Our popular workshops, which give children an exciting hands-on learning experience, have helped to earn Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum a prestigious Quality Badge. The organisation was among the first recipients last summer of the new award from the Council for Learning outside the Classroom. The Quality Badge, developed by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, offers schools the guarantee of a high quality learning experience for pupils, as well as the assurance that the necessary risk management processes are in place. Sophie Wilson, Exhibitions & Education Manager, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Quality Badge especially as so many children from local primary schools regularly take part in workshops at the Art Gallery and Museum on a diverse range of topics including Archaeology and Roman Britain, Victorian Life and Investigating Toys. They can also learn about Cheltenham-born explorer Edward Wilson, Divali, or even create a monster inspired by objects in the Oriental Gallery.” Presenting the first awards last year, Children’s Secretary Ed Balls said he wanted to see as many children as possible taking part in learning outside the classroom as part of their school lives. He added: “Educational visits are among the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life.” To gain the Quality Badge, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum completed a detailed assessment and evaluation of its education services, and will be subject to spot checks to ensure the quality of its systems.
