Student Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Write a unified paragraph (7—10 sentences), at a level higher than English 85, with clear topic statement, supporting sentences, and a conclusion sentence.
Write essays using sentence variety, parallelism, noun and adverb clauses, restrictive and nonrestrictive phrases and clauses, and high-level vocabulary;
Write with minimal grammatical, mechanical, and syntactical errors such as fragments, comma splices, subject-verb agreement errors, pronoun agreement errors, and pronoun shifts;
Demonstrate comprehension of high-level ESL texts and dictation.
Class Rules: 1.
The teacher may change this syllabus at any time.

Any student who misses 4 classes will be dropped from the class.

Students can turn most homework in late. Homework turned in after the beginning of class will
Grades: be marked down 50%. NO EXPLANATIONS OR EXCUSES NECESSARY AND NO
EXCEPTIONS. Note: some assignments must be done in class and cannot be turned in late.
4.
If a student knows in advance that they will miss class on the day of a test, the student may arrange with the instructor to take the test, without penalty, at an alternate time.
5.
Students who miss class on the day of a test without first contacting the instructor will not be allowed to take a “make-up” test. However, the lowest test score will be dropped at the end of the semester. No exceptions.
6.
No student will be allowed to prevent the instructor from teaching or prevent other students from learning by disrupting the class. Any student who disrupts the class will first receive a verbal warning, second receive a written warning, and finally be removed from the class.
“Disrupting class” includes, but is not limited to, talking to other students during a lecture, going in and out of the classroom to answer a cell phone, or exhibiting aggressive behavior toward the instructor or other students.

Each student must keep a copy of ALL tests and assignments, which the teacher will check at the end of the semester .

All students must follow Pierce College's rules as expressed in the “Student Code of Conduct.”
You will be graded on attendance & participation (10%), writing assignments (25%), quizzes (25%), and a two-part final exam (30%).
