Yes LOCATION: Montana, USA FARM DESCRIPTION: Small family owned and operated goat dairy, very holistic, located in Montana. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ROLE: A great opportunity to gain on-the-job work experience in a wide diversity of areas related to farm/herd/crop management. The trainee will also gain experience in cheese making with an overall goal to become self-sufficient enough to become a future farm manager. Trainees will have the opportunity to experience the American culture and their working methods and practices. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties will include but are not limited to: Observe and assist with; treatment and animal health maintenance and feeding; recognize feeding problems of individual animals. Learn about common and alternative feeds, treatments and remedies. Pasteurize products, Sanitation control, milking procedures; understand the relationship between composition and yield of milk. Learn to monitor and analyse herd performance for milk production, reproduction and cull rate; how to grow vegetables and to make cheese. Demonstrate independence in performing milking routine Introduction to record keeping in making nutrition decisions. TRAINING/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE GOALS & OBJECTIVES: The intern will do record-keeping of goats and kids, planting, garden maintenance, harvesting, milking, vaccinating, herd health checks, feeding, watering, etc. Cheese mixing, pasteurizing, and packaging. Learning to sample cheese, run farmers’ market booths, tours at the farm, etc. Experience multicultural and interpersonal relationships. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Essential Previous experience working on a dairy farm Have an interest and desire to learn about American Agriculture Hold a full, valid driver’s license. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED: The ideal candidate should be able to lift and/or carry up to 23 kg repeatedly and be in good condition to continually stand and/or walk. They should be a motivated, committed and hardworking individual who is willing to learn new skills and working practices. The trainee should demonstrate a positive attitude and work well as part of a team. CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY: Be aged between 18 – 30, hold a full, valid driver’s license and either be currently studying a related horticultural course, OR have recently graduated from college or university and have at least 12 months practical experience, OR have at least 5 years horticultural related practical experience.
