
Fraternity: Definition:
o Oxford: Fraternity: 1 a group of people sharing a
common profession or interests. 2 N. Amer. a male
students’ society in a university or college. 3 a
religious or masonic society or guild. 4
friendship and mutual support within a group.1
o Webster: A body of men associated for their
common interest, business, or pleasure; a
company; a brotherhood; a society2

Differences:
o There are various types of fraternities: General
(social), service, professional, honorary,
academic, research as well as religious and
cultural.6, 11, 15
Early fraternity examples: Phi Beta Kappa Society,
1776 (first greek letter fraternity, members were
rejected from the Flat Hat Club); Kappa Alpha Society,
1825; Sigma Phi Society, 1827 (first national
fraternity)6
First Professional Fraternity: Kappa Lambda Society of
Aesculapius, established for the purpose of bringing
together students of the medical profession in 1819.7




community of interest, fellowship, friendship, guild,
inclusion, lodge, order, society, unity2,3

particular interest or activity. 2 an
organization offering members social amenities,

 One of the oldest and largest medical fraternities in
the world. Founded 1889. 14 active chapters (US,
Canada, England & St. Maarten)

equipment, ect.)
 Internationally recognized organization

Organization.
Alumni that are members of fraternal organizations
while in school tend to give more financial donations
back to the school after graduation.12, 13, 14, 15
o 22% of Fraternal alumni reported giving $500$1000 to their alma mater compared to 4.2% of
non-Fraternal alumni.12
o 11% of Fraternal alumni reported giving $1000$5000 to their alma mater verses 1.4% of nonFraternal alumni.12
28% higher retention rate among Fraternal students.12
