It’s About How You LIVE ‘Community’ Presentations
Overview, Suggestions and How To Use PowerPoint
Overview
The It’s About How You LIVE ‘community’ presentation (or LIVE presentation)
and the other community presentations included in this section were created to
help hospices, coalitions and other organizations deliver a unified message in
their community about the need to improve end-of-life care. The goal of the
presentations is to motivate the general public to take action to improve end-oflife care for themselves, their family and friends, and community. They can be
used with audiences in many settings and are designed so that you can
customize to meet the needs of your target audience.
LIVE Presentation
The focus of the LIVE presentation is to promote the central message of the
LIVE campaign:
 Learn about your options for end-of-life services and care
 Implement a plan to ensure your wishes are honored
 Voice your decisions to family, friends and health care providers
 Engage in personal or community efforts to improve end-of-life care
The LIVE presentation takes 20-30 minutes depending on how much additional
information you add. The presentation begins with the speaker asking the
audience four questions then presents national data to raise awareness of endof-life issues. The speaker provides information on how to take action to
improve care at the end of life using the LIVE message and case examples. The
presentation concludes with information about community, state and national
resources, and a “call-to-action” of things people can do to improve end-of-life
care. An additional one-page LIVE overview handout (Section III) and a
Participant Feedback Form (Section V) are available to distribute to the audience
and are located in the Toolkit.
The LIVE presentation can be modified to focus on a variety of end-of-life care
issues such as Advance Care Planning, Caregiving, Pain, Hospice/Palliative Care,
and Grief. (For more information on each topic, go to www.caringinfo.org –
Caring Connections consumer website.) The initial four questions and the four
case examples in the LIVE presentation can be changed to direct attention to a
particular issue as listed above. Also, think about how you can customize the
presentation so it is relevant to the specific values and concerns of a diverse
audience – and, to have the maximum appeal to the group involved.

Other Community Presentations
In addition to the LIVE presentation, other PowerPoints are included in this
section to use for community presentations – see below. They are each 20-30
minute presentations designed to integrate the LIVE message with specific endof-life care topics.
 Advance Directives - 2005 Fall Outreach Presentation
 Communicating End-of-Life Wishes - 2005 Fall Outreach Presentation
 Understanding Hospice, Palliative Care and End-of- Life Issues – 2005 Fall
Outreach Presentation
Suggestions On How To Use The Community Presentations
Carefully review the LIVE presentation and the other presentations provided so
that you can customize the information to your community and your needs.
Please note where to insert your organizational/coalition name, and your
community initiatives, services and resources. Be sure to make the changes that
are in bold before you print handouts, and before you train your speakers.
Detailed speaker notes are provided in the PowerPoint file. Use them as key
talking points as it fits for your speaker and presentation. Most important, do
not read the speaker notes word for word (except for the case examples). We
want you to engage your audience, not bore them!
All of the community presentations are designed for the general public and can
be used with a variety of audiences, depending on your goals. Think about
groups that convene regularly, or groups who might have an interest in the endof-life care such as:
 Social/civic clubs (garden club, rotary)
 Workplaces (employees, managers)
 Town/city government (elected officials and government workers)
 Schools (teachers, counselors and students)
 Residential communities (neighborhood associations, assisted living
facilities, senior living communities)
 Healthcare providers (referral sources and partner agencies)
 Veteran’s groups
 Faith communities (churches, synagogues, mosques)
 Professional organizations (human resource managers, fundraising
professionals, nurses, guardians, attorneys, trust officers)
 Community health and human service providers (aging service providers,
disease associations, case managers)
Overall, the goal of each community presentation is for all audiences to learn
more about how to take action to improve end-of-life care and the resources that
are available to assist them.

Technical Information About Using PowerPoint
The LIVE presentation and the other community presentations are in Microsoft
PowerPoint. The file includes slides, speaker notes and handouts. You can print
the slides on overheads or use a computer (LCD) projector. If you don’t have
access to audiovisual equipment, we strongly recommend that you print the
slides as handouts. Your audience will be able to follow your presentation better
if they have visual cues.
The speaker notes are provided in the PowerPoint file. You can print speaker
notes by selecting “file” > “print” > “print what” and then > “notes.” Follow the
same procedure to print handouts, selecting “handouts.”
If you want to rearrange the slides or use only selected slides, you can move
them using the slide sorter view. If you want to add slides, select “insert” then
“new slide.” Refer to the help feature of PowerPoint (F1) for additional
information about any of these functions.
To print handouts of the PowerPoint presentation in black and white (without a
dark background):
1. Open the Presentation
2. Go to ‘Format’ on the Tool Bar Menu at the top of your screen
3. Click on ‘Background’
4. A background fill box will appear. On the drop down box, click on the
white background and put a check mark on ‘omit background graphics
from master’
5. Click on ‘Apply to All’.
6. Print using the Handout option. Note: though the white text will not be
displayed on your screen, it will print correctly in black and white (if you
have a color printer, set up your printer to print in black and white only).
We encourage you to tailor all of the presentations to meet your needs.
However, the copyright for the presentations and related materials are owned by
the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
