Chapter 2
Social 20-2
Mr. Salik
Intended Outcomes:
1.3 appreciate how forces of nationalism have shaped, and continue to shape Canada and
the world.
1.8 examine how the development of nationalism is shaped by historical, geographic,
political, economic, and social factors (French Revolution and Napoleonic Era.)
Rationale:
The purpose of this assignment if for each individual to discover pieces of what happened
during the French Revolution and have their peers help them in putting all the pieces
together. This is important because the French Revolution was the spark that ignited
nationalism as we know it today. Up until this point Monarchs and government officials
ruled over populations with no concern for individuals, but after this event governments
realized they must govern for the people or suffer the fate of Louis XVI.
Assignment:
You will be working in pairs on this assignment. You are to choose from any of the
events below to create a presentation on. In this presentation you must include:
 What your event is- including when it happened, who was involved, what this
lead to and pictures of all of the above.
 A brief description of the events leading up to it (brief because your peers’ topics
will be on some of these events)
 Links to at least one of the factors that help to shape nationalism: Historical,
Social, Economic, Geographic, or political. (find more information on these in
your textbook p. 42-50)
 A personal definition of ‘Nationalism’ (in your own words)
Your presentation must be at least 2 minutes in length answering each of the topics
above. Your presentation rubric is attached to this assignment.
Tips for Success;
o Read the rubric before you put your presentation together
o Consult your textbook for extra information
o Use some form of media in which to present your information (PowerPoint,
Poster etc…)
o Ask questions if you have any
o Discuss with your peers what they will be covering in the presentations prior to
yours so you do not overlap to much information
Time Frame:
You will have 2 classes to do your research and complete your assignment. The
presentations will be on Friday February 12.
