Attendance: Attendance at every lab is mandatory. THERE ARE NO MAKE UP LABS IN SUMMER SCHOOL. No exceptions. More than three absences will result in automatic failure of the course! For safety reasons, if you are more than 5 minutes late to lab, you will not be allowed to perform the experiment. Students are allowed to drop their lowest lab report grade and the lowest grade on one of their daily quizzes. This will allow for a student to be sick, or forget their goggles/shoes one time. Quizzes (48%): 3 hourly quizzes will be given, testing on 3-5 experiments per quiz. A short quiz will be given at the beginning of each lab period, to test for student preparation. Study guides will be provided on the course website. Lab Notebook and Final Lab Reports (46%): Your notebook will consist of pre-lab and in-lab entries as described in class and in Appendix C in the lab manual. A list of notebook requirements for each experiment will be provided on the course website. Pre-lab entries will be checked before beginning each experiment. Yellow carbon pages containing In-lab and Post-lab entries are to be submitted for grading along with the Final Lab report. Lab reports are available in the laboratory manual. Due dates will be announced by instructor. Late lab reports will receive a penalty of 5% of total grade per day. Unless previously arranged with instructor, once graded lab reports are returned to students, no more lab reports will be accepted. All students are required to submit INDIVIDUAL lab reports. Any evidence of copying is a violation of the academic honor code, and will result in failure of the course. Technique (6%): Goggles are required at all times when working in the lab. Glassware must be left clean and dry in the lab drawers. Equipment cords must be unplugged and wrapped, and the equipment pushed to the back of the hood before leaving. Failure to clean area will result in grade penalty for the experiment. Absolutely no open toe shoes or sandals allowed in the lab. Improper dress will result in dismissal from lab for the day, and a grade of zero on the experiment. Technique grade is assigned on a daily basis by the instructor. Students will be penalized WITHOUT WARNING for the following: failure to follow dress code, failure to bring safety goggles, failure to prepare for lab, failure to participate in lab, failure to clean up after oneself, failure to turn in materials on time, or if you are in any other way a safety hazard to yourself or others. Special Concerns: Federal Americans with Disabilities Act: If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodation in order to participate fully in this course, you should inform the instructor of this fact in writing within the first week of class or as soon as possible. If you have not already done so, you must register with the Office of Disability Services in Westside Hall and obtain a copy of your Accommodations Letter. You should then meet with your instructor to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accommodations Letter. Health Concerns: If you have any existing physical conditions that might affect your performance, your health, or other peoples' health in the lab, please inform your instructor. This information will be kept confidential; examples might include pregnancy, medications, allergies, epilepsy, AIDS. Special arrangements may be possible.
