Location: Wolfson Building Faculty of Engineering, University Of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD Reporting to: Faculty Infrastructure Manager Purpose of the New Role: The purpose of the role is to provide efficient management and leadership of all technical staff within the Wolfson and ITRC Buildings and the Creep Laboratory. The role is fundamental in ensuring effective provision of test and analytical facilities in those buildings. The Senior Technical Manager will collaborate and liaise where necessary with Senior Technical Managers of other Engineering disciplines in order to co-ordinate tasks requiring different engineering skills. The role also involves regular meetings with Heads of Research, Heads of Teaching and Infrastructure and Facilities Managers to plan strategies to keep laboratory provision and equipment up to date and to maintain a high level of technical support. Main Responsibilities % time per year 1. Manage and lead a team of highly skilled technical staff based across various locations, including the Wolfson building, ITRC building and the Creep Laboratory. Ensuring the technical staff deliver the required level of support to the Teaching Departments and Research Divisions of the Faculty to allow all teaching and research activities to progress. Responsible for and dealing with all the day to day personnel management, holiday, disciplinary, sickness and motivation issues as they arise, liaising with HR as necessary. Manage the performance review process, organise training and keep technician specific training and skill records up to date. Regular meetings with senior technical staff to ensure effective delegation of work activities and responsibilities. 30% 2. Ensuring sound, up to date, technical support and knowledge is provided. Provide advice and assistance to both research and academic staff and students in the choice, scope, likely outcomes of techniques available, provision of laboratory equipment and project work. Advising Head of Departments, Research Division Heads and Research Group 20% Heads on the following: New and replacement Equipment purchases. Teaching laboratory equipment and running of labs. Future requirements regarding teaching laboratories. Outlining, via the Faculty Infrastructure Committee strategic planning of technical support to ensure future progress and to consolidate effective and efficient technical support in that area. 3. To train users (undergraduate, postgraduate, post doc, academic and technical staff) in the use of processes and equipment in the Wolfson Building, including electron microscopes, thermal analysis, metallography, x-ray diffraction, etc. Where appropriate to operate and obtain results using equipment in the Wolfson for those previously listed. 20% 4. Responsible for the efficient and effective day to day management of the Wolfson building, ITRC building and Creep laboratory, ensuring access and security to all laboratories and offices. Ensuring general housekeeping in laboratories and offices are kept to a high standard. Ensuring all laboratory equipment is kept up to date, modern and tidy, maintained, and any repairs or maintenance are recorded. Liaise with Estates, Faculty Infrastructure Manager and Faculty Facilities Manager over repairs and maintenance to fabric of the buildings, refurbishment and rearrangement of laboratories and offices. 10% 5. Monitoring of work carried out within the areas of responsibility. Dealing with workload and quality issues as they occur. 5% 6. Responsible for all aspects of Health and Safety within the areas of responsibility. Keeping up to date with regulations and working closely with the Faculty Safety Officers. Auditing laboratories and offices periodically to ensure compliance. To be aware of safety issues elsewhere in the Faculty and University that may impact on the operation of activities in the buildings as dealt with at Faculty Infrastructure Committee. 5% 7. Identify shortfalls in technical support. Produce Role Profiles for recruitment of new staff at the required TS Level. Shortlist and arrange interviews for candidates, liaise with HR in Job advertisements and marketing of new posts. 5% 8. Any other duties associated with the role. 5% Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Qualifications/ Education Skills/Training Essential First level degree in science or engineering discipline. Substantial experience in both time and scope in a University or research laboratory engaged in areas of materials testing (Physical, Chemical and Mechanical testing). Significant proven people and time management experience. Proven high level planning and organisation skill and resource management. Excellent computer skills. Excellent analytical, negotiation and Page 2 of 4 Desirable Experience problem solving capability. Proven technical specialist knowledge and understanding in own technical areas. Experience in communicating with students, academics, and researchers from a wide ethnic background. Statutory/Legal Experience creating risk and COSHH assessment and Safe systems of work. The interpretation and implementation of work related regulations and procedures and an understanding of non-compliance on other staff and the University (e.g. Health and Safety) Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder Short and medium workload planning to ensure technician support is provided across the buildings. Recording and monitoring technician skill levels. Managing the Performance Review process across the Mechanical Test and Analytical Technicians. Personnel management of technician team. Dealing with personnel issues as they arise. Ensuring a quality service is provided to all the technical staff’s customers. Managing the Laboratory based Trainee Technician throughout their 4 year training programs. Selection, purchase and where required commissioning of new, replacement equipment and parts for existing equipment up to agreed budget limits. ii) taken in collaboration with others Collaborate with other area Safety Officers to implement Health and Safety regulations within the working areas. Liaising with Faculty Infrastructure Manager, Faculty Facilities Manager and Senior Technical Managers within the Faculty of Engineering to co-ordinate tasks requiring multiple engineering disciplines where required. Producing long term strategies to achieve the aims/goals set for the Departments and Research Divisions of the Faculty. Identify and source new and replacement plant and equipment required for the updating of the laboratories which require substantial financial resources. iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder Dealing with personnel issues if they elevate.
