Science Laboratory Technician Job Description Overview The technician provides support for the three sciences Biology, Chemistry and Physics for core, additional and separate AQA Science. Manchester Islamic High School for Girls has a strong history of scientific success. Separate Science pupils achieving 100 % A* to C with average pass rates for core and additional around 90 % A* to C year on year. There are three laboratories, soon to be refurbished with one small prep room area. The majority of preparation is carried out in the classrooms as most of the stock is held in the subject specific laboratories. There are no laboratory animals within the department and chemical and washing facilities are provided in the small prep area. There are four Science teachers and some Science lessons are delivered in non-Science specific classrooms however, practical experiments are prioritised in the laboratories so staff will rotate according to needs. There is currently a drive on How Science Works skills, particularly practical skills in preparation for the new GCSE specification. The technician will be expected to assist with these along with KS3 Science club. All duties will be expected to be carried out according to agreed School Policies and procedures. Core functions of the Science Technician: The construction and repair of equipment Liaison with external contractors Preparing and appropriately storing chemical solutions Collection of equipment and materials from storage and their organisation for class use Preparation of equipment and materials for lessons both for demonstration and class use Trialing practical activities Checking materials and equipment, before and after class use, for quantity and damage Preparation of classroom specification resources prior to the academic year. Care of plants and the Biological garden in the science department Maintenance of laboratories to ensure a clean, safe and orderly environment Organisation of repairs or specific maintenance when necessary Advising science teachers on safety matters or potential problems with equipment Maintenance of an inventory of materials and equipment and associated stock taking duties Placing orders for laboratories equipment and checking deliveries Assisting staff with class practical work Safe disposal of chemical and biological waste Cleaning of glassware and other equipment Other tasks that may be requested by SLT from time to time Ensuring practicals are coordinated between teachers with year groups. First aid trained Internal CPD induction / CPD to be carried out. Report any safety concerns to the head of department immediately Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm and the technician is contracted to work 10 days during the holidays. This will be arranged with the Headteacher.
