After stirred 10 min, 3.5 ml of 25 mM HAuCl4 was added. The mixture was initially light yellow and slowly became colorless after stirred 20 min, indicating the formation of gold hydroxide. The resulting solution was aged for at least 24 h in the dark before it was used [1]. Fig. S1 The FESEM image of silica mesospheres. The average diameter is about 360 nm. Fig. S2 The TEM image of gold seeds. 2 Fig. S3 The TEM image of gold seeds sprinkled silica mesosphere. The inset shows the magnified image of it. The gold seeds are sprinkled on the surface of silica mesosphere uniformly. 3 Fig. S4 The calculation details for gold particles coverage on the surface of silica spheres from particle P I to P IV. (i) The targeted noncontinuous particulate gold nanoshells. (ii) The magnified images of the corresponding nanoshells surface morphology. (iii) The images of gold coverage calculated by the Micro-Image Analysis software. 4 Fig. S5 The four targeted shells are illumilated one by one using unpolarized light from a halogen lamp through Dark feild condenser (NA=1.4). The scattered light are collected through the objective (×40, NA=0.6). (A) The carbon coated copper coodination grid.
