SEDIMENTATION
Objective: To become familiar
with the different types of marine
sediments, the processes that
make them, and understand how
turbidity currents are created
Biogenous Sediments – Exercise 1
Flocculation
How does sediment behave
differently in SW vs. FW?
Demonstration
Exercise 2 – Turbidity Currents
(~55mph)
Exercise 2 – Turbidity tubes
• Set up tube –
–Set angle
–Fill with water
–Assign tasks (one timer, one
recorder, one pourer, one ruler)
–LEAVE BLACK CLAMP ON TUBE!!!
Exercise 2 – Turbidity tubes
• Run 6 trials
–2 at 40ppt Green (different angles)
–2 at 80ppt Red (different angles)
–2 Silica (Yellow is High density and
Orange is Low density plus one small
scoop of silica)
Measured vs. Theoretical
• U = 0.7 [(d1 - d2)(gh)/d2] -2
Densities
d2 – Water =1 g/ml
d1 – 40ppt = 1.026 g/ml
80ppt =1.055 g/ml
High Silica = 1.19 g/ml
Low Silica = 1.095g/ml
