Sarah Ball, Ealing, UK
Exchange Student “Tony”.
Those who arrived on time for last week’s meeting, something that’s come to be regarded as
approximately 7.23am or perhaps even a tad later, stood around agonizing that our leader had not
made an appearance. Finally, PE George Cubbon, perhaps concerned that we might lose the
attention of members, seized the moment and the bell and we sailed into the Rotary prayer.
Whilst this was not as good as having the ‘P’ himself, we were at least able to shuffle along for
breakfast without the awkward wait for guests as has become customary recently.
In fact we were not to fret for long, as President Charles strode triumphantly, albeit late, into the
room. He thanked Donato Sgobba for deputizing at last week’s meeting before inviting our
Rotary visitor to say a few words about her home club. Sarah Ball is a member of the Ealing
Club in London, UK. Ealing boasts being the home of Europe’s largest jazz festival. Sarah
supplied a banner from her home club, where she is one of 12 members.
President Charles outlined the activities to be held the following week as part of the ‘On-toBermuda’ event. Essentially we are still trying to finalize numbers planning to attend the Home
Hospitality and Banquet. There is still space available for the Golf Tournament, but the
Leadership Course has been cancelled due to poor response.
Meeting of 20th October
Last week’s meeting was a Club Assembly and President Charles called upon the Directors to
update the membership on the various avenues of service.
For Club Service Gilda Furbert stated that ‘…things look pretty good.’ Though she had
previously advised that the pig and the bell frequently co-habit.
For Community Service Barbara Edwards has had a poor response for the Tag Day scheduled
for 28th October. President Charles advised members the Club had received a thank-you letter
from the LCCA; their Tag Day had netted approximately $18,000.
Barbara is earnestly looking for host families for 4 Exchange Students arriving from New York
at the end of next week and staying between 5 and 7 nights.
Secretary Bob Wood confirmed an Auction is planned for Thursday 24th November to assist our
annual support of Rotary Foundation. President Charles requested each Rotarian invite at least a
guest couple to the Auction. Bob confirmed that local sales of On-Line Raffle tickets has now
been approved by Cabinet
Vocational Service George Scott had nothing to report.
Treasurer PP Gary Edwards is currently in Australia investing our funds.
International Service Yvette Swan is looking into supporting a water project in Mexico.
President Charles has requested VP George Cubbon chair the 25th Anniversary celebrations to be
held in May, 2006.
The raffle was won by George Scott.
Bushisms (The Very Curious Language of George W. Bush)
“I need to be able to move the right people to the right place at the right time to protect you, and
I’m not going to accept a lousy bill out of the United Nations Senate.” George W. Bush October
