President George was missing last week so we were treated to another “dry run”
conducted by President Elect Donato Sgobba. After PP Charles Jeffers had treated
members to another round of “Bermudaful Day”, all went pretty much to plan with PP
Ken Siggins presenting the Club with a used projector which had been saved from
extinction by the careful repair work of PP Delano Ingham.
Meeting of 11th January
PP Bob Flath introduced speakers Ardleigh Young, President of Friends of Bermuda
National Library and Joanne Brangman, past member of Pembroke Rotary Club and
Chief Librarian of Bermuda National Library.
Ardleigh provided some background to the work of the “Friends of Bermuda National
Library”, advising that she and Joanne have been working together for the last 8 years.
The “Friends” are a small but mighty group who give of their time to support the library.
The organization was formed in 1976 and works on an annual budget of between $10K to
$15K. In addition, donations from The Stempel Foundation enable the “Friends” to
provide books for the adult library.
Landmarks achieved by the group include the refurnishing of the Library’s ground floor
meeting room; a Christmas “Open House”; story-telling at Windreach Village, and
hosting a Valentine’s Day Dance as well as the regular updating of equipment. Amongst
the upcoming events is a weekend “Read Around the World” to be held at the Youth
Library and featuring Portugal as well as story-telling events to be hosted by international
speakers.
The “Friends” have one significant hurdle to overcome: The Youth Library on Church
Street is to become homeless in October 2008. As well as the establishment of branch
libraries, it is Joanne’s dream to see a new National Library realised under one roof and a
committee has been formed to explore this possibility as well as to organize fund-raising.
The speakers were thanked on behalf of the Club by PP John Kessaram.
The Raffle was won by Gary Edwards, as if he hadn’t won enough this week….
MEMORABLE LINES FROM MOTHERS OF FAMOUS PEOPLE…
“Of course I’m proud that you invented the electric light bulb. Now turn it off and go to sleep!”
Sonya Edison, Mother of Thomas.
“But it’s your senior photograph! Couldn’t you have done something about your hair?”
Raquel Einstein, Mother of Albert.
“That’s a good story! Now tell me where you’ve really been for the last forty years!”
