Significant Earthquake or Volcano Tic-Tac-Toe Activity Due Date 11/6/2013 Objectives: 1. Describe how energy from the Earth's interior causes changes to Earth’s surface (i.e., earthquakes, volcanoes). 2. Describe how earthquakes and volcanoes transfer energy from Earth's interior to the surface (e.g., seismic waves transfer mechanical energy, flowing magma transfers heat and mechanical energy). Procedures: Choose a significant earthquake or volcano from earth’s history to study. They will then choose three of the following activities to use in their report. Tic-Tac-Toe Write and type a one to two page research paper about volcanoes. Types, explosiveness, how you can tell them apart etc. Double spaced, 12pt font. Create a power point presentation about 1 event that explains and shows location, size, deaths resulting, destruction, how energy was involved and how it changed the Earth’s surface. Must be visually appealing, have coordinated pictures and words on each slide, show organization and your technology must work. Minimum of 5 slides. Invent a game, either card or board that teaches about earthquakes, faults, folds, and plate tectonics. Cards or game pieces/board should be colorful and have information related to the topic. You must include an instruction sheet with rules and procedures. 30 pts. Make a puzzle out of the Ring of Fire. Label each plate (puzzle piece) with the correct name and type of plate boundary it is on. Puzzle must be in color, matted on thick paper or cardboard, be neat and visually appealing. 30 pts. 40 pts Design and build a model representing your earthquake or volcano. Must be an accurate representation, durable, well-constructed, neat and show creative use of materials. Must include an informational label of some kind. 30 pts. Create a brochure about faults or plate tectonics. Each panel must have information and at least one picture that relates to the topic. Attractive neat layout, correct spelling, folded with important points highlighted. Create a poster about volcanoes. Must contain colorful pictures with labels and descriptions about each picture. Poster should be informational and teach about the different types of volcanoes (composite, shield and cinder cones), as well as the parts of a volcano.. 40 pts. Design the front page of the New York Times with an article about the volcano or earthquake you chose to report on. The article should include two or three interviews from fictional characters. Must have a title, be clear, understandable, use descriptive words and have at least 1 picture. 30 pts.
