Thursday 26th November 2015 The Quest for Earthquakes and Volcanoes Earlier today, year 3 went on a dangerous expedition to explore deadly volcanoes and earthquakes! We had to answer lots of questions and demonstrate that we knew the difference between an active and dormant (sleeping) volcano. We then got into a big circle and a group of children sat in the middle- they represented the magma. As it got warmer, it rose, came up and out of the volcano and became lava. Next it was time for the EXPEDITION! First stopEurope by plane to Southern Italy. Nicol was our tour guide and told us about Mt Vesuvius before we went on an archaeological dig in Pompeii. After that we crossed the sea by boat to Sicily to Mt Etna. Unfortunately some children were sea sick! We learnt that Mt Etna has lots of small eruptions and blows smoke rings. Nicol commented that, “It’s smoking!” Next stop- North America to Washington State to see Mt St Helens where in 1980 there was a big eruption that left the volcano looking like a giant had eaten a big chunk out of it! Then we drove (4 in a car) to San Francisco where a major earthquake occurred measuring 7.9 on the r Richter scale. After that, our expedition took us to Chile in South America where we learnt about the largest earthquake ever recorded- 9.5 on the Richter scale! We imagined how this would feel. Some of us fell over! Then we flew to Japan in Asia where in 2011 a huge earthquake and tsunami cost the country over £100 billion to recover. Last stop was the devastating tsunami in Indonesia on Boxing Day.
