Arts Committee Meeting Minutes September 14, 2014 Notes Taken by: Stephanie Young Present: Terri McInerney, Sufi Fox, Julie Nolte, Krista Holt, Michelle Nicely, Alissa Powell, Lara McQuade, Carrie Haber, Bonnie Orange, Stephanie Young, Dana Schmidt, Dorothy Franks Approval of Minutes: The June 17, 2014 Arts Committee meeting minutes were approved. Art Cards: there was discussion regarding why the art cards didn’t make as much money last. It was mostly due to overhead costs associated with a local printer/vendor. The program netted $4,000, rather than $6,000, which is about 1/3 of the expected income. Some other printing options were considered, including: Original Works, takes 33% Art Wise, takes 33% Silver Graphics, takes 33% Artsonia, takes 20% It was also noted that The Arts Committee is looking for a new Art Card Coordinator. Lara McQuade offered to help with the project. November & April were discussed as possible Art Card deadlines – for the winter holidays or Mother’s Day. The Art Card Cordinator will need to work with the classroom art teachers to developed a schedule that works for both the art teachers and the project. Carrie Haber and Lara McQuade offered to do the scanning for the project. Julie Nolte mentioned that she knew of another resource and would email Carrie the information. Art Parent Coordinator: Terry McInerney announced that Jessa Stanton is our new Classroom Art Parent Coordinator. Art Auction Update: Krista Holt reported that the Elks Lodge has been chosen as the site for the Spring Arts Auction. The event will be held Saturday, March 14, 2014. Mercedes Lewis is in charge of donations; Carrie Haber is handling marketing. The committee needs people to sign up to help with donations and corporate sponsorships. The committee is also looking for a Drawing Chair. Heidi Marini(?) was suggested. One-half of the money raised goes to support Westlake’s Arts Program for the 2015-16 School Year. Program Report: Dorothy Franks reported that Samantha Allott has been hired to teach 14 weeks of general music, beginning in September and running through December of Arts Committee Meeting Minutes September 14.2014 2014. Third, fourth and fifth grade dance begins in October. Papiba Godinho is scheduled to teach Capoeira to 3rd grade; Ibu N’gom will teach African dance and drumming to 4th grade and 5th grade Hip Hop will be announced. Dixie Mills, who runs Fringe Fest was suggested as a possible candidate, as well as Carolyn Wormhoudt. It was noted that for Hip Hop should include age appropriate moves and music. The program is scheduled to run for 12 weeks-every other week through the end of April 2015. Dorothy reported that a flyer went out to all teachers to recruit Arts Parents from their classes during Back to School Night. She also talked about getting a letter out to kindergarten parents introducing the arts program to them and letting them know that their participation is welcome. She noted that this is the Arts Committee/Arts Program 20th Anniversary. She discussed the possibility of celebrating it during our annual Day of Dance, with special guests and possible raffle prizes. A commemorative poster was suggested – similar to the ones that have created in the past. Founding Arts Committee member and School Board member Ken Wagmen expressed interest in participating in the celebration. Dorothy applied for a $2,000 matching grant from The Arts Council of Santa Cruz County for dance - $1,000 for Ibu and $1,000 for Dawn Imbrie, both of whom are Spectra Artists. She is waiting to hear. 5th Grade Mural Project: Discussion regarding the 5th Grade Culminating Art Project included a theme of “Celebrating Westlake Arts,” a possible tile project along the retaining wall of the upper playground to include animals and habitats. Stephanie Young mentioned that our new art teacher Julie Nolte has done a number of tile projects with other schools. Julie is interested in interested in working on the project. The Arts Committee has budgeted $2,800 for the project. District Update: There was no District update.
