Possible Topics/Material: Brainstorm all the topics and material from lecture, readings, and
homework that you think students should study.

Prioritize your Brainstorm: Since you only have 50 minutes, you must decide what material is good
for an SI session and what material the students should study at home. To do this, think about the
material and its relative importance and difficulty and list the topics in the appropriate quadrant.

How to Cover Material: Plan your sessions using the grid above. Typically, “warm up” using the
“Important but Not as Difficult” quadrant. This brief exercise will assess that they truly know the
basics and will make them feel more confident. Then the main focus (“work out”) of the session will
be in the “Difficult and Important” area. Think of what strategies and techniques you will use to help
facilitate their learning of that material. Finally, during the “Cool Down”, an exercise that pulls it all
together is fitting.
