Course Description:
Intermediate Arabic 202, the spring semester of a year-long course in Modern
Standard Arabic (MSA), is designed for students who have completed the first five
chapters of Al-Kitab (Part 2). From the commencement, there is a focus on gaining a
strong foundation in the communicative skills of listening and speaking, as well
reading and writing. At this level of Arabic language learning, building vocabulary is
essential. While the concentration is on Classical Arabic, there will be some exposure
to dialect through proverbs, television serials, film and music, which builds up
vocabulary as well as encourages students to learn about the customs and traditions of
the Arab world. We will read newspaper articles and watch Arab films through the
course of the semester.
Student participation and group activities encouraging conversation in Arabic are vital
to the course. The course is conducted in Arabic.
We will meet Monday, Weds, and Friday from 9:30-10:20, and you will have one
hour long AT sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Since language learning is a
cumulative process, students are expected to attend all classes and AT sessions. If
class or AT session is missed, the student is still responsible for the material missed.
Any student who misses 25% of the course will automatically receive an F.
Extracurricular Activities: The Arab Language Table will meet Weds at 12:30 in
Vail Commons. An Arabic film will be shown every Wednesday night from 7:00-9:00
in 1086 Chambers. Other extracurricular cultural activities will be announced
throughout the semester.
