Chinese Culture and Civilization is an advanced Chinese language course with an emphasis on understanding Chinese culture and civilization through studying higher level

Chinese vocabulary and sentence patterns. Upon completing this course students should be able to do the following:

1.

To retell and summarize the articles and to be able to participate in the discussion of the contents of the works.

2.

To distinguish the difference between formal and informal Chinese as well as spoken and written Chinese.

3.

To understand general and basic Chinese culture and civilization.

4.

To write Chinese culture related short treatise.

5.

To present some interested topics about Chinese culture with sufficient Chinese language and assistant tools such as PowerPoint.

Textbook: The Outline of Chinese Culture 中国文化概要 edited by Xiaoming Zhang.

Course Requirement

Preparation

You are expected to prepare the material for the designated lesson before coming to class.

Preparation includes, but is not limited to read the texts, vocabulary lists and explanations carefully until the meaning of each word is fully understood and every character is

recognized. Your preparation is crucial in this course . Success largely depends on your preparation.

Attendance and Performance

You are expected to attend every class and participate actively. Frequent absences and tardiness without proper reason will influence the instructors’ evaluation of your grade.

Quizzes, Tests, Oral presentation

Quizzes will be given about 2-3 times a week, and will be held at the beginning of class;

Tests will be given for about every chapter. There are two oral examinations and one final examination ;

Oral/group presentations will be held about biweekly.

Homework

The regular homework includes:

● reading the vocabulary and lessons;

● doing the exercises on the book;

● writing compositions (please write the compositions neatly on every other line).

Instructors’ Expectations of Students

● Speak only Mandarin Chinese in the classroom;

● Do not work on assignments after class has started;

● Do not chew gum or eat in class;

● Turn off all noise-making devices such as cell phone and MP3 after class has started;

● Do not work on your notebook computer after class has started.

Note: Late homework will be corrected but will receive no credit. There will be no makeup quizzes or tests except in some extraordinary circumstances beyond the students’ control.
