Summer Reading Assignment World Literature Mrs. Kinnee Congratulations on finishing Anansi Boys! I hope that you enjoyed the novel! One thing that stuck out to me was the intricate way that the author developed the characters in the novel. We know SO much about these characters: what they look like, smell like, sound like, think, feel, value, how they act, how they relate to others. I feel like if I walked up to Fat Charlie on the street, I would instantly know who he was, even though I have never seen a real picture of him! The really amazing part to me, however, was not just that I feel this way about Fat Charlie, but really about almost every character in the book. There are not many books that you read where SO many characters are SO well developed. The Task: Your summer reading assignment consists of 2 components: an artistic component and a written component. The components are each related to the characters of the novel. The Artistic Component: For one character, make a collage of pictures, words, artifacts, drawings, etc. that represents everything that we learned about that character throughout the novel. Try to think back and include as many details about the character as possible. After you hash out these details, think of ways that the details can be visually represented. Be creative! The artistic component should include different mediums. Feel free to draw your own art work, but this should not be the ONLY thing to do. A good collage stimulates the audience with its creative, visual appeal. The ENTIRE piece of paper should be covered. Make sure that your final product is neat. The Written Component: After completing your collage, write a paragraph explaining the purpose of this character in the novel. DON’T just focus on plot development. What did this character add to the novel? Why was this character important to understand? How did this character make the work complete, so to speak? The paragraph should have a topic and concluding sentence, and it should be at least 10 sentences long. The paragraph needs to be typed, double spaced, and in size 12 font. Grammar and conventions count! The Twist: You will be drawing the character you are completing this project on from a hat! Sorry, you may not choose your own: I don’t want to grade 48 projects on Fat Charlie! Due Date: The assignment is due next Friday, August 27. Grading: This assignment will be worth 30 points. Please see the rubric below Criteria Artistic Component Written Component Total Grade Collage is a solid representation of the character as presented in the novel. Detail is shown. It is obvious that the student read the work carefully and critically. More than just the physical appearance of the character is represented. Different mediums are used to illustrate various ideas. Collage is creative, interesting, covers the entire paper, and is neat. Topic sentence encompasses main idea of paragraph. Concluding sentence wraps up paragraph well. Reader is not left hanging or questioning. Ideas are sophisticated and well thought out. Specific examples from the text were given to support the development of ideas. No grammatical errors.
