He was Fine Arts Fellow at the University of Southampton from 1978 to1981 and has been a visiting lecturer at the Chelsea School of Art, the University of Plymouth and Sotheby’s Institute in London. Ray was a member of the Art Working Group for the National Curriculum in 1990. Ray has made over fifty publicly-sited sculptures in this country and abroad. He has work in many museums and other public collections. He had a solo exhibition of paintings at the Barbican in London in 1997. He has won a number of awards including Prizewinner at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition 16 (1989), the Rowse Kent Public Art Award (1996) and a Royal Society of Arts ‘Art for Architecture’ Award (1993) He has worked on a number of urban regeneration projects, including city centres (Newcastle upon Tyne 1997 -1999), seaside towns (Teignmouth, Devon 1993 -2006) and small villages (Whittlesey, Nr. Peterborough 1998 -1999). Ray was Lead Artist for the new Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital from 1997to 2000. He completed a major commission on the facade of the Trellick Tower in West London (2003-4) and has recently been working as Lead Artist on new schools for the Bath and North East Somerset Council (2003-2009). Recent commissions also include a vision document for the Manchester Joint Hospitals (2007- 8) and participation in Essex County Council’s: ‘Spirit of Place’ project. (2007-9) Ray has long had a practical interest in the materials and processes of art. His research in these areas, can be seen in many of his major art projects ranging from planting schemes to fibre optic lighting artworks, hand-painted laminates or water-jet cut sculpture. His book ‘The Artist’s Handbook’ (Dorling Kindersley) has sold extensively world-wide and he completed a revised edition which was published in 2003.
