Class
Description:
This is a lecture course that covers the fundamental concepts of chemistry including chemical problem
solving and writing skills. This course is intended primarily to prepare you for UCD's Chem 2A but also
partially fulfills SCC's natural science requirement for the AA degree.
Passing Workload Chem satisfies the prerequisite for enrolling in Chem 2A.
Text:
Introductory Chemistry, An Active Learning Approach, 5th ed., Cracolice and Peters
There is a pull-out periodic table in the text. Please bring it to class everyday.
Online Web-based Learning system (OWL) access code: An OWL password comes bundled with the
text book if it is purchased at the UC Davis bookstore. If you purchase your text book anywhere else
you may purchase an OWL password separately at the publisher’s website: www.cengage.com/owl.
Choose "Intro/Prep".
also required:
Scientific, non-graphing calculator
Homework:
Homework will be assigned every week. Homework will be on OWL. Start and due dates are online.
Please check them carefully.
If you earn ≥85% of the possible points on an assignment, you will receive full credit for the
assignment. Otherwise, your score will be prorated according to the degree of completion. Homework
will be worth a total of 100 points at the end of the quarter.
No late homework will be accepted.
Quizzes:
Two quizzes will be given during the quarter. They will be closed-note, closed-book. Quizzes are worth
75 pts each. You will need a calculator and a scantron for quizzes. Missed quizzes cannot be made up.
Exams:
One 150-point midterm will be given. The exam will be closed-note, closed-book and you will need a
calculator and a scantron. No make-up exam will be given.
Final:
Final exam is on: Friday Dec 19th from 3:30-5:30pm, location TBA. It will be worth 250 points.
No late or early finals will be given.
Scantron form:
Use form no. 882-E
Late/ missed
assignments:
Late homework will not be accepted. Missed quizzes and exams cannot be made up. If you know you
are going to miss a quiz or an exam you may take it early if your reason is acceptable. Yours will
probably not qualify so don't miss any quizzes or exams.
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory. If you miss more than 3 class hours without an acceptable excuse you may be
dropped from the class. If you must be absent contact me prior to the absence to make the appropriate
arrangements.
Cheating:
Cheating on any quiz/homework/exam will result in a zero on that quiz/homework/exam.
Grades:
You will receive two grades for the course: a pass/fail from UCD and a letter grade from SCC.
Your grade will be based on the points accumulated on homework, quizzes, exams, and the final:
homework 100
quizzes
150
midterm 150
final
250
total
650
Grading scale: A ≥ 90% > B ≥ 80% > C ≥ 70% > D ≥ 60% > F
Letter grades of A, B, and C are "pass" grades. Letter grades of D and F are "no-pass" grades.
Web Page:
A web page to provide answer keys and other information will be available at:

General:
-All cell phones must be turned off during class. This does not mean your ringer is turned to "silent" or
"vibrate" but that your phone is powered off.
-Ask questions. If you have a question during lecture raise your hand. If I don't see you, feel free to
speak up.
-Use my email for questions that come up outside of class. I tend to check my email fairly frequently
and it works pretty well for problem solving.
