Concepts to know:
Glaciers are huge, slow moving pieces of ice that moved across parts of the
Northeast and reshaped its landscape.
The Appalachian Mountains are a physical feature found in the Northeast.
Granite is a product found in stone quarries in the Northeast.
England settled the first colonies in the 1600s.
Immigrants came to the Northeast to have a better life.
New York City, New York, had the largest immigration center in the United
States in the early 1900s.
A primary source is a record of an event by someone who participated in the
event or saw it happen. An example would be a photograph taken at the
event.
Know how to read a time line.

Short answer:
Know how glaciers shaped the Northeast. Glaciers scraped away soil and
formed basins, which later filled in with water to become lakes. Also,
glaciers scraped away enough topsoil in the northern coastal areas to leave
poor, rocky soil behind.
Know why only Native Americans lived in the Northeast in the 1500s.
European explorers and settlers had not arrived yet.
Know how a harbor and a port are related. A harbor is a protected area that
allows ships to dock safely, and many ports may be located in harbors.
Know a cause and effect of the American Revolution. Cause-colonists became
angry because Britain made them pay high taxes. Effect-the United States
became an independent country.
Know changes that occurred during the Industrial Revolution. 1-machines
powered by steam replaced machines powered by water. 2-electric power
plants provided electricity for homes and factories. 3-electricity let to the
spread of new inventions like the telephone and light bulb.
Know what caused Northeastern cities to become crowded during the 1800s
and early 1900s. Millions of immigrants arrived in the United States, and
many stayed to work in the factories in the Northeast.
