BRIEF HISTORY OF BRIDGE WORKSHOP,
JALANDHAR CANTT.
Bridge Workshop/JRC is an important Engineering workshop of
Northern Railway which is famous for high quality steel fabrication works
such as Railway and Road bridges, Foot over bridges, Platform shelters,
Microwave towers etc. In addition to steel fabrication, this workshop is
also casting RCC & PRC slabs for bridges. Some track items like SSD
and Glued joints are also being manufactured
Bridge Workshop originally existed at Jhelum in Pakistan, which was
shifted to LDH in 1947. There was a problem of space and electric power
to accommodate Bridge Workshop at LDH, which necessitated
development of Bridge Workshop at Jalandhar Cantt. Finally, the Bridge
Workshop was shifted from LDH to Jalandhar Cantt in the year 1949.
The workshop covers an area of 10.28 Hectares to accommodate
Engineering, Electrical, RPF, Stores and Accounts Departments for close
coordination.
The Bridge Workshop was established to meet with the requirement of
fabrication of various types of girders, platform shelters, Workshop
Sheds, foot over bridges, road over bridges to cope with the changed
requirements technology, casting of RCC/PSC Bridge Slabs was also
added.
Prior to 9.9.1980, the workshop used to be headed by Sr Civil Engineer
assisted by other officers & staff. The post was upgraded to Dy Chief
Engineer from 9.9.1980.
Presently, the workshop is headed by Executive Engineer assisted by
three Assistant Executive Engineers, ABE/BWS/JRC is looking after the
overall work of Bridge Workshop. ABE/L-I/JRC is looking after the Line
works of SSE/JUC & PTK unit. ABE/L-II/JRC is looking after the section
of JAT-UHP Section, Qazigund - Baramula Section & JAT-Katra Section.
