PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
This is the basic course in accounting. Accounting is a discipline concerned primarily
with the organization and presentation of business information. This introduction
gives the accounting major a foundation and overview which can guide his/her future
study. For the non-accounting major, this course provides an understanding of the
nature and scope of accounting information.
METHOD OF PRESENTATION
This is primarily an online course – you need to read the text, do the homework and
quizzes, interact with the discussion board and communicate with me regularly. The
emphasis of this course is the translation of business events according to the
procedures and principles established by the accounting profession. Therefore, each
subject area is presented within the context of accounting theory and then reinforced
with problems and exercises.

Details of the Mastery Section Items:
MyAccountingLab: (0-250 points)
You have the opportunity earn up to 250 mastery points by completing the MyAccountingLab
assignments through on-line learning tools that seamlessly link assessment tools and an ebook. It gives you anytime/anywhere access to an e-book and a rich variety of on-line
resources. MyAccountingLab allows you to work homework assignments and receive real
time feedback along with direct links to where a problem or question is located in the
textbook.
MyAccountingLab homework assignments and quizzes are generated algorithmically, and you
may rework assignments to demonstrate mastery of learning objectives and maximize your
homework points. For each assignment, only your “Best” score will count! Homework may be
done as many times as you wish, the chapter quizzes are set at 3 attempts. The Your Company
Quizzes which are graded manually – you have only one opportunity on them.
You can also find the Study Plan from within MyAccountingLab – left side – link is called
Study Plan.
Chapter Homework and quizzes: (0-60 and 0-96 points)
For each chapter there are homework and quizzes available. They are scheduled so that you
can demonstrate your success with each chapter and complete the course in a timely fashion.
You can take the assignments at any time, you do not need to wait until the due date. They are
available now. They are algorithmically developed so you can work them up to three (3) times
for quizzes and unlimited for homework, and only the best score counts toward your grade.
Your Company Quizzes (7 points each – 5 quizzes = up to 35 points)
All public companies have to publish their financial results. Their information is available online at their websites. Go to http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/ and choose
one of the top 100 on the list, click on the company and then in the first section, under
corporate headquarters there is usually a link to the their website. Follow that link and look for
“investor relations” or “stockholder relations.” Find their most recent annual report. Send me
an email indicating which company you are going to report on – because only one student can
be assigned to each company. I will maintain a list on the MAL site informing you who has
chosen which companies, so choose early to get the company you want.
Note that the quizzes are positioned after we have covered certain material, so wait until you
have reached that point in the course before you open each Your Company Quiz – and earn up
to 7 points for each quiz, up to 35 points.
On Online Examination (100 points)
Similar to a traditional in-class paper and pencil examinations – but in this case it is an online
examination. You will not have the ability to repeat questions (like the quizzes and
homework) so prepare in advance.
In Class – Final examination
On the last night of our session 7/7/15 – after some review and questions and answers – you
will write a traditional paper and pencil examination.
