St Edmundsbury Cathedral Following in the footsteps of Edmund, King and Martyr Friday 9 March 2012 For immediate release Cathedral Treasury reopens On Saturday 24 March St Edmundsbury Cathedral's Treasury re-opens with an exciting new exhibition in a brand new space in the Crypt, which is accessed via the Cloisters. One of the exciting new developments in the Treasury is the possibility of displaying books and manuscripts. The opening exhibition will highlight books related to the Abbey of St Edmund. Alongside the books will be a new exhibition tracing the development of church plate over the centuries. The items on display belong to churches across the Diocese. ‘This is an exciting new development at the Cathedral and will be an additional attraction for visitors,’ comments Canon Chris Burdon, Canon Theologian at the Cathedral. ‘We are particularly pleased to be able to have the Bury Cross, a replica of the original Cloisters Cross made in the Abbey of St Edmund, on display.’ The Treasury has been closed since autumn 2009, when due to other building works taking place at the Cathedral, it was necessary to put the collection of Church plate and other treasures into storage. Opening times will be from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 12.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. on Sundays. Please note that access to the Treasury is via a short flight of steps. In the future it is hoped to have wheelchair access too. **********************************ENDS ********************************** Further information from Sarah Friswell, PR Manager, on 01284 748726 or pr.manager@stedscathedral.org Sarah Friswell, Public Relations Manager The Cathedral Office, Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 1LS Telephone: 01284 748726 Fax: 01284 768655 Email: pr.manager@stedscathedral.org www.stedscathedral.co.uk
