The Bible comes to life at the Cathedral
On Saturday 11 June the traditional stories of the Bible will be brought to life in a series of short
dramas in the Nave of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds. Starting at 10.00 a.m., and
continuing throughout the day in 10 minute slots, the drama begins with the story of creation from
the Book of Genesis and continues through the Bible into the New Testament. All sorts of props
and costumes will be used – such as a boat to tell the story of Jonah and the whale.
Visitors are encouraged to come at any time during the day and stay for as long or as short a time
as they wish to watch the drama. No tickets are required – just turn up and enjoy what is
happening.
‘We hope that visitors will enjoy having the chance to see the Bible ‘come to life’, comments Sarah
Friswell, PR Manager for the Cathedral. ‘This event is part of our commemoration of the 400 th
anniversary of the King James Bible and the main focus of the day will be fun! ‘
The technique being used to tell the stories is called ‘Open the Book’. The aim of this scheme is to
help familiarise children with the faith stories that have shaped our culture. This is a national
project – now spreading from Inverness to Jersey - which presents a series of ten minute Bible
stories for collective worship in primary schools. A storyteller team is made up of volunteers from
local churches. They aim to bring the stories to life through the use of costumes, high impact
visual aids, and simple drama. They sign up to a code of practice which stresses that they are
there to provide a story-telling service, not to preach or to evangelise.
The Cathedral Shop, open Monday to Saturday 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., stocks a wide range of
children’s Bibles and story books.
