As stated in our University’s Strategic Plan, we are committed to providing development opportunities that are
recognised for their excellence. We aim to ensure that they continue to enhance our performance and the
experience of our students.
As an official centre for the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), Leeds Metropolitan is offering staff
the opportunity to undertake an accredited programme in Personal Leadership. This programme is a key part of
our University’s broader aim to create a high performance organisation through the development of effective
leaders and managers at all levels.
This programme is aimed at:
Experienced middle managers and/or Project Leaders. The following profile provides an overview of the types
of activities that you either undertake or may demonstrate potential in. We believe that potential delegates will:






have responsibility for managing services and / or teams, and/or
lead on projects to bring about changes in services, resources or systems
be accountable for the quality of the services supplied by their area of responsibility and for
improvements in the quality and efficiency of operations
be responsible for ensuring that individuals and teams within their area operate within organisational
policies and procedures
have already participated in some form of management development
be interested in learning more about leadership and becoming a more effective manager

A residential to explore personal leadership potential and attributes
An introduction to theories of leadership
Leadership and Emotional Intelligence
Leadership and follow-ship
Reflection of own leadership style
Setting direction and communicating the vision
Advanced communication skills
Conflict management skills
Change management skills
Coaching in management
Decision making skills
Action Learning Sets
This programme is assessed in the following way:
All assessment methodologies are work-related and designed to provide individual development and direct
organisational benefits.


1 Reflective Review – approximately 2000 words
1 Leadership Development Plan and Reflective Learning Log – approximately 2000 words
Time Commitment:




Residential – 3 full days
Modular attendance - 10 full days across the full period of the Programme
Action Learning Sets – 6 or 7 half days across the full period of the Programme
Assessments - to be completed in each delegate’s own time, or as agreed with their line manager
