Applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons are invited for the above post, effective
immediately. This is a full-time 2-year contract post.
The incumbent must be a mature, energetic, driven, strongly disciplined individual, able to deal with
multiple, simultaneous demands in a high-pressure environment, who is capable of ensuring the complete
analytical and research integrity of the HySA/catalysis fuel cell laboratory in the Centre for Catalysis
Research (CatCentre) at UCT, inclusive the maintenance of equipment and implementation of proper
procedures and protocols. The incumbent must have excellent communication, inter-personal and planning
skills and have good understanding and knowledge of low temperature PEM fuel cell MEA preparation and
characterisation techniques.
Key responsibilities:








To develop procedures for assembly of uniform fuel cell MEAs and stacks;
To develop a high throughput laboratory scale system for producing MEAs for low temperature
PEM fuel cell systems;
To import current ‘Best-in-Class’ technology and expertise so as to leapfrog the international
development efforts in PEM fuel cells;
To liaise with and report to industrial/government partners in the HySA/catalysis programme;
Compilation of documentation for HySA/catalysis reporting requirements;
Fuel cell laboratory housekeeping and stock management;
Oversight of junior laboratory and research technicians in fuel cell laboratory;
Co-supervision of postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students.
Requirements:


A Chemical Engineering qualification (minimum MSc);
Minimum experience of at least 1 year in a multi-user fuel cell laboratory environment.
This is a full-time position for a 2-year period. The remuneration is between R 278 710 and
R 332 918 per annum.
