PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Supervises and performs skilled, technical electronics work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of
control systems associated with heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems in school
building and facilities. Oversees and assists in the operation of a centralized computer system utilized to
monitor, schedule, program, and control HVAC operating systems. Supervises and oversees maintenance
and repair of HVAC equipment by contract employees.
DISTINGUISHING CHARCATERISTICS:
This is a single, specialized, technical and supervisory position in the Energy Management Division. An
employee in this classification performs, skilled, and technical electronics work at the journeyman level
and supervises one subordinate technician. An employee in this classification also supervises and
oversees the work of a large group of contract employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of
HVAC equipment. Work also involves the operation of computers and related equipment requiring
technical knowledge of software programs and programming abilities. Work is performed under general
supervision, and considerable b latitude for independent judgment in determining work methods to be
used, and is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences, reports, and evaluation of results obtained.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
Graduation from high school, or GED Certificate, supplemented by training equivalent to an
apprenticeship in one or more energy related maintenance trades.
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Minimum Experience:
Considerable and progressively more responsible working experience in energy management
systems installation, maintenance and repair.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted
knowledge, skill, and ability.
Special Knowledge and Skills:

Good knowledge of federal, state and local codes and regulations relevant to HVAC
systems, and their management and operation.

Good knowledge of the common procedures, equipment, tools, materials, problems and
hazards associated with the operation, maintenance and repair of electronic, pneumatic,
and mechanical control systems.

Good knowledge of the theories, methods, techniques, problems and hazards associates
with the operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.

Good knowledge of supervisory methods and procedures.

Good knowledge of the operating characteristics of micro-processed based electronic
equipment.

Ability to perform all essential duties of the classification.

Ability to operate computers and utilize specialized environmental control systems, as
well as common word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, design
specifications, diagrams, schematics, and manufacturers manuals.

Ability to plan and layout work, and to estimate time and materials needed.

Ability to perform routine record keeping tasks and arithmetical computations.

Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.

Skill in the use of tools, testing equipment, and materials pertinent to the classification.

Skill in the use of computers and applicable software programs.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITITES AND DUTIES: (May not include all duties performed; not all
incumbents perform all essential functions delineated.)
1. Supervises and performs skilled, technical electronics work in the operations, maintenance and
repair of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic controls associated with heating, ventilation, and
air conditioning systems; maintains a centralized, computerized, energy control and monitoring
system.
2. Supervises and participates in troubleshooting, adjusting, calibrating, and repairing HVAC
control mechanisms, using hand and power tools, measuring and testing devices, and computer;
supervises and assists in performing routing and preventative maintenance.
3. Supervises and participates in measuring and/or testing environmental conditions, using meters
and testing equipment, to ensure that environmental conditions are consistent with school system
parameters and other relevant standards.

4. Supervises and participates in monitoring the status of HVAC systems at school buildings and
loading HAVC scheduling into the computer.
5. Supervises and oversees the work of contract mechanics engaged in the maintenance and repair of
HVAC equipment.
6. Receives hot/cold complaints from schools; determines whether problems can be solved by
reprogramming the computer or by on-site repairs and recalibration.
7. Confers with vendors; assists in preparing bid proposals and contracts; assists in preparing the
division budget.
8. Keeps records and prepares reports; orders parts, materials and supplies.
9. Performs related duties as required or assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Attributes:
Work requires sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination necessary to
perform all essential tasks, including operating and using all tools, equipment and vehicles; lifting
and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling,
and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; climbing and
working from ladders p to 25 feet high.
Hazards/Unusual Demands:
Work is performed both inside and outside school district building and facilities, and often
requires working unusual hours and may be designated for 24 hour on-call. Employee is exposed
to a wide range of climatic conditions, dust, flammable or toxic chemicals, and loud noise.
Employee is also exposed to potential electrical shock and other physical hazards when working
on electronic controls and systems, operating tools and equipment, and working in high places or
cramped spaces. Work requires vision necessary to determine color differences. Employee is
required to wear and use safety clothing and equipment and to comply with safety policies and
procedures.
