2. Identify and use text features to facilitate understanding of informational texts
Objective: Students will identify text features in advertisements in order to describe how
they make the ad appealing to its audience.
Warm Up:
1. Students will look at an ad to describe what makes it appealing. Think: Why
would someone want to look at this ad? Would you try this product?
2. Students will then look at a different ad and identify the test features as they are
already labeled.
Procedure:
1. Students will explore the advertisements found in the Laurel Museum. They will
be looking and identifying text features.
2. Students will use a graphic organizer to describe text features found in the
advertisements displayed at the museum. They will evaluate if they think the text
feature makes the ad appealing to its audience.
3. Students will pick one advertisement to label text features.
4. Students will than describe how the text features made the advertisement
interesting and appealing to consumers.
Assessment:
1. Students will be given a copy of an advertisement and required to label the text
features.
2. Students will create an advertisement using text features.
Primary:
Advertisements can be fun. Pretend you and your friends are going to open a
lemonade stand to raise money for a homeless shelter. Create an advertisement to
encourage people to come to your stand to enjoy some lemonade and help others in
need. Include three text features in your ad.
Intermediate:
