A 1 to 2 inch 3-Ring Binder, (no larger) for your course Workbook/Portfolio Software: You need to have MS Office 2007 or MS Office 2003 installed on your personal computer, or have ready access to a computer system containing that software. If you have OpenOffice, Microsoft Office 97 or XP, Microsoft Works, or WordPerfect Office THEY WILL NOT WORK FOR THIS COURSE. Course Description: The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of computer information technology, including the information processing cycle. The course provides a survey of computer technology, nomenclature, and use as productivity tools. Will provide the opportunity for developing an understanding of the personal computer and emphasize its use as both stand-alone and networked devices. Exercises using application programs, an exercise using a program scripting language and various lab assignments will allow students to interact with computer technology, hardware and concepts of common application programs in the current PC environment. General Course Objectives: 1. Use modern operating system software and maintain a secure, efficient computer system. 2. Identify major component parts of a computer system and describe their functions. 3. Differentiate between operating system software, networking software, and a variety of application software. 4. Create and/or edit basic word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics files. 5. Edit an MS Access Table, create and print an MS Access Report. 6. Identify current, future, and historic events in the computer field and their global effects on society. 7. Use a computer system for interactive communications. 8. Define terminology associated with the computer field. 9. Define the elements of the computer Machine Cycle (fetch, decode, execute, store), and the basic functions of a computer (input, processing, output, storage and retrieval, communication and distribution.) 10. Define a computer information system and differentiate between data and information including the characteristics or qualities of information. 11. Identify issues in computer ethics. 12. Identify examples of capabilities and limitations of computers. 13. Create, edit and execute a programming script using Hypertext Markup Language. Page 1 CIS 110 Syllabus Class Participation: This is a fairly intense course. It is the student’s responsibility to actively participate in the course, and be responsible for all material described in the syllabus. If you are going to drop this course, you must formally withdraw. If you just stop doing coursework, you will receive a failing grade on your permanent record. I do not give incompletes. You will not be given an Incomplete as a grade…so, don’t ask. Academic Integrity: Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. All work must be your own. At the instructor’s discretion, a 20% penalty per week may be assessed for late work. Requirements Summary: (A Weekly Activities Schedule at page 3, below.) The following is just a summary. Create Back-up Copies of all of your Coursework as you progress through the course. Do not trust just one disk or drive to safely contain your coursework. Make a duplicate of all your work just in case your primary storage media fails…or you make a mistake and accidentally delete/destroy something. Students are required to work with Microsoft Office 2007 Professional, or Microsoft Office 2003 Professional to access and use course documents and files, and are REQUIRED for Quizzes, and exercises involving creation and/or editing of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If using Office 2003, the File Format Converter is required. Students will be required to send e-mail messages and coursework as e-mail attachments, to the instructor. Students who do not presently have an email address/account must establish an e-mail account. Pierce College provides a free e-mail account for registered students. Chapter Quizzes: There are 3 files containing sets of Chapter Quizzes. Each of those files covers 3 or 4 chapters (Ch 1 - 4, Ch 5 – 8, Ch 9-11). You are to complete those quizzes as you read/study each chapter in the Text. You must E-mail completed sets of these quizzes to your instructor according to the schedule on pages 3 and 4 of this Syllabus. Note: All submitted coursework must include your Last Name and First Initial, and which assignment you are submitting (e.g. MillerD Ch 1-4 Quiz) Students are required to create a Web Page using Hypertext Markup Language (30 Pts). The SCSite Labs requirement. There are 15 Shelly-Cashman Interactive Labs to be completed. Access the Shelly-Cashman Labs via the CD that came with your textbook, or via the Shelly Cashman Website. You MUST use the prepared Answer Sheets provided by your instructor to complete these labs. These sheets are available in a file titled SC Lab Quizzes- Answer Sheets.xls. Copy that file to your desktop and use that file to answer the SC Lab Quizzes Questions. When all of the 15 labs are completed, e-mail the completed SC Labs Quizzes Answer Sheets file containing all 15 completed labs, in that 1 file, to your instructor for grading.
