LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER
DEPARTMENT OF OCEANOGRAPHY
FACULTY OF SCIENCE
The Department of Oceanography wishes to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in
a field of Ocean and Atmosphere Science relevant to the activities of the
department, which includes Physical and Biogeochemical Oceanography, Climate,
and Southern Hemisphere Meteorology. Current research interests in quantitative
ocean and/or atmosphere science are required. Combined experience in ship based
research and numerical modelling expertise would be an advantage.
Prospective candidates must have graduated with a PhD in a relevant field on or
before 30 June 2010. Candidates applying for the Senior Lecturer post must have
an established, internationally recognized, post doctoral research track record.
The Department has access to High Performance Computing facilities and various
research vessels. A new South African state of the art research ship will start to
operate in 2012. Further information on active research areas can be obtained from

The successful candidate will be required to:




lecture to undergraduate classes at all levels, and supervise fieldwork and
practical computing applications
give specialist lectures at postgraduate level and supervise postgraduate
projects and students
take part in fieldwork and/or research cruises
establish an independent research activity and attract appropriate funding
The current annual remuneration, including benefits is:

Senior Lecturer
R393 743
The remuneration increase for 2010 is under review.
