April 1 Spring Meeting and Paint Out
At Houmas House
Don’t miss our spring meeting and paint out
scheduled for April 1 at 9:30 a.m. The location is
the historic Houmas House Plantation (circa 17701840) grounds at 40136 Highway 942 (River Road)
in Darrow LA,

will do a pastel demonstration. You do not have to
paint in pastels to attend, please come and paint
with like minds in a beautiful location. There will
be no charge for admission, demo, or paint out;
however, we will be expected to have lunch at the
restaurant on the premises. For lunch reservations,
call Betty Efferson at 225 293-9793 or email her at
bettyeffersonartist@me.com. Your friends are
invited to join us regardless of the medium in which
they work. Assistance for beginning pastel artists
will be available. If you wish to tour Houmas
House, you may purchase a ticket from them.
Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen, hat and
painting supplies.

Registration fees will be $5 higher onsite.
Tickets for the Saturday night banquet may be
ordered with registration, or if someone has already
registered and wishes to add banquet tickets, they
may do so up until April 3 by sending an email to
Susan Webster at the email address below along
with their confirmed registration number, the
number of tickets they need, choice of menu—
beef/chicken/vegetarian—if they registered by
credit card we can use the same card, if by check
they can mail a check for the appropriate amount,
$49 per meal. Banquet tickets may be purchased in
Albuquerque on Thursday afternoon, and possibly
on Friday morning, subject to availability.
The President’s Dinner Meeting will be held on
Friday evening and each society may have their
president or the president’s representative attend
free of charge. Others may attend and pay for the
meal. If you wish to sign up, contact Susan
Webster.
The 2009 convention will be here before we know
it! At this point almost 500 artists have registered
and it promises to be one of the best ever!
Souvenir Program is being worked on now. It will
be provided to every registered artist in their
registration package. Advertising in the program is
available. This is a great way to promote your
workshops or show. To advertise in the program
contact Susan Webster.
Please remember that pre registration will close
April 3, 2009. Registration must be mailed or faxed

IAPS Convention
Rodin Exhibit in Baton Rouge
Exhibitions
The LSU Museum of Art currently is featuring an
exhibit Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession. The
exhibit will be at the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100
Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge LA until April 19,
2009.
Alan Flattmann has a one person exhibit scheduled
to open at the Bryant Galleries at 316 Royal Street,
New Orleans LA beginning March 28, 2009.
The exhibition highlights Rodin’s most ambitious
work, “The Gates of Hell,” which consumed almost
40 years of his life. Rodin exhibited many of the
individual figures from the project as independent
sculptures, including his “The Thinker” and “The
Kiss.” Other sculptures in the exhibit include the
emotionally charged figures from “The Burghers of
Calais” “Monument to Balzac” and “Monument to
Victor Hugo.”
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00
p.m. Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is
$8 for adults, $6 for seniors 65+. All children are
admitted free.

News of Our Members
Sandra Burshell’s pastel received the 36th Pastel
Society of America Purchase Price and the Award
of Exceptional Merit from the Appalachian Pastel
Society 2008 Show. Her work was included in the
12th IAPS Exhibition Web Show and was featured
in Create Better Paintings “How to Make Interiors
More Personal”. She recently gave a talk on “Art
As Healing” to the John Hopkins School of Public
Health in Baltimore MD.
Sandra Davison has been invited to participate this
summer in the Door County Invitational Plein Air
Competition. The event takes place in a beautiful
peninsula in late July.
Marcia Holmes was awarded the Chicago Pastel
Painters Degas Pastel Society Award for her
painting “Peonies.” Marcia and the artists of
Atelier in Covington, LA were filmed in December
for a television program called “Louisiana Art &
Artists” for Louisiana Connect Television Network.
Work by Marcia and Alan Flattman is being
shown at the St. Tammany Art Association in a
show celebrating the Cover Artists of Inside
Northside Magazine. The show continues until
April 30 at 320 Columbia Street, Covington, LA.
Dawn Koetting and Glinda Schafer have work that
has been accepted into the 7th Annual Grand Isle Art
Exposition.
Jim Markle had two paintings accepted in the
Grand Valley Artist’s Winter Competition. He
received a second place award.

Third National Exhibition. Scott Shields, chief
curator of the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento,
CA is the juror. Work will be displayed at their
gallery in a prestigious location in Marin County

Conservatory Art Classic 24th Annual Juried
Show. Representational art only. Monetary awards
total $14,500 including a $5,000 purchase award.
Pastel will be a stand-alone category for awards this
year. Entry deadline is June 13, 2009 and the show
is held in September. Joshua Rose, Editor of
Western Art Collector Magazine is the judge.

Offering Workshop Space and
Classes
Highland Valley Studios is a non profit
organization offering grants, scholarships and more.
It is available for experienced and nationally
recognized artists to put on or take a workshop in a
learning environment. The facility is on a 30-acre
ranch with many barns all set up for art instructions
in a variety of mediums. The grounds and locations
nearby are lovely and offer a huge variety of
painting venues. The studios/barns offer a variety
of props for still life, portrait, or figure painting, etc.
