REPORT ON IAPS CONVENTION
countries were represented including a large group
from Australia.
The Degas Pastel Society was well represented at
the IAPS Convention. There were so many
demonstrations that our members attended ranging
from landscape, portraiture, still life to better ways
to handle art business that I asked some of them to
share their favorites with us.
Brenda Delle attended the masters class with Leslie
DeMille as well as all of the other demonstrations
that were offered with him. One of her favorite
demonstrations was the hands-on demonstration
where students painted along with him doing larger
than life eyes, hair, nose and chin.
Sandy Burshell reported that as Recording Secretary
of IAPS she wanted us to be aware that there is a
new IAPS President, Maggie Price. Liz Heywood
Sullivan will be the new Web Show Chairman and
Maggie Price will be the new webmaster.
Marcia Holmes attended the self-portrait masters
class with Jimmy Wright. She enjoyed his overview
in a lap-top presentation of his study of self portraits
of some of the great masters and more
contemporary influences such as Lucian Freud and
Botero.
Sandy also attended several wonderful demos and
talks including a Jimmy Wright demonstration of
his method of creating expressive flowers in his
own individual gestural, colorful style on hotpressed watercolor paper using Golden Acrylic
Pastel Ground, rubbing alcohol and pastel. She also
attended demonstrations by Sean Dye on doing
large scale paintings, Margaret Evans on a 3-step
process with gouache and pastel, Claudia Seymour
on a much tighter interpretation of an actual still life
on Belgian mist drymounted on acid-free matboard.,
and Terry Ford on underpainting techniques,
stressing value, lighting, composition in plein air
painting. She enjoyed Liz Haywood-Sullivan’s
discussion of managing one’s life as an artist
including pricing, working, networking, sales and
framing.
Sandy enjoyed lots of networking, comraderie and
found very positive spirits. She noted that there
were more attendees than 2 years ago and many
Marcia reports students were given a generous
amount of personal attention as he guided each of
them through the attempt at a self portrait, as well
as a follow-up during the session where he
suggested a comparison in style to a master painter.
She felt this approach gave the students confidence
and compliments and presented an avenue for future
study by presenting a master for each student to
examine for themselves.
Marcia felt it was a wonderful experience that she
shared with fellow Degas member, Bill Creevy.
Marcia says she definitely recommends taking a
Pre-Convention Workshop at the next IAPS
Convention.
Carol Clavier reports that her favorite
demonstration was a hands-on demonstration with
Anne Heywood. Anne provided aprons, pastels and
paper to paint a backlit woods scene. At the end of
the demonstration Carol almost had a finished
painting. She also enjoyed seeing the
demonstrations at the Trade Show especially one
done by Stephanie Birdsall of a rooster. She found
these demonstrations of papers, pastels, etc. most
informative and helpful.
Claire Olivier says that she is definitely happy to
have been able to attend the IAPS Convention for
the first time. She found it inspiring and helpful.
She attended three hands-on demonstrations. Her
favorite was also the demonstration with Anne
Heywood entitled “Backlit Deep Woods Scene.
Claire liked her teaching technique of giving each
student a copy of the same scene and having them
follow along step-by-step with her as she worked.
The conclusion was having all of the paintings
shown for comparison.
Claire also enjoyed the hands-on demo with portrait
artist, Leslie B. DeMille. His emphasis was on
larger-than-life breakdowns on facial features to
show how to “see”, then how to accomplish the
same when the painting is done in a normal size.
She says “to be able to be part of a short session
with this accomplished artist, who is down-to-earth
and witty, using a live model, needs no more
justification.”
The third hands-on demo that Claire enjoyed was
with the Scottish artist, Margaret Evans. In short
Claire says “imagine being able to experience all of
these opportunities in one short time in the comfort
of one hotel. I hope I am able to do this again in
two years.”
Alan Flattmann says “it was wonderful meeting so
many of our DPS members from around the
country. I especially enjoyed our little prebanquet
DPS party in my room.”
Glinda Schafer says that she enjoyed the ambience
of the hotel. She found the wide patio and good
restaurant were enjoyable and were great gathering
places for old and new friends. Glinda didn’t get to
sit in many classes since she was working, but she
especially enjoyed Liz Heywood-Sullivan’s
business lectures since she felt this was information
she needed at this time.
In summation each member attending the
convention learned a lot and enjoyed meeting
fellow artists from around the world.

Hats Off to Judith Carducci
By Betsy M. Kellum, PSA, PSWC-DP
“I just returned from the Portrait Society of
America’s convention in the Washington DC area,
where the best portrait artists in the country gather
to provide lectures, presentations and demos. It was
most inspiring. Expecting to see the oils dominate,
with pastel running a distant second (or third!), you
can imagine my surprise and delight when Judy
Carducci stole the show with her pastel work. On
the opening night, she participated with about 15
fabulous artists in a “Face Off”…each painting a
portrait in a two and a half hour time frame. Judy
not only won the Face-Off (by popular vote) but
sold her painting for the highest price.
Additionally, she was awarded a second
demonstration, on stage, with the entire convention
participants watching. What a wonderful promotion
for pastels! Between our pastel societies
publications such as The Pastel Journal and artists
such as Judy, pastel will get the validation that it
deserves. Cheers to Judy for a job well done.”
